Bongo Fury

Hi All
One of the two belts that runs from the front of the alternator to somewhere in front of the engine has burnt out (lots of burning rubber smell and eventually snapped).
Can anyone help me with a part number or way of identifying it to the local parts shop here in Slovakia where they don't speak any English?

Mines a 2wd diesel 1997 and believe it will be the same as a Ford Ranger, any other info would be most appreciated

Also, is it okay to drive it whilst trying to get a new belt and fitting it, I am in very cold climate with a fullish load?
Any other pointers (I plan to buy and fit 2 new ones and keep the existing as a spare)?
I assume the two are the same and tensioning is straight forward?

Hi, Ian does them in the Bongo Shop. I'm sure he will ship immediately.

If you still have one belt in place it should be ok to drive.

Order two pairs and bin the old one. Should be a simple fit.

Not sure that Ranger belts will fit as they have a viscous coupled fan on the water pump pulley. Bit late now, but for next trip out, complete set of replacement belts are always worth keeping in the spares kit on a long journey. Even if you don't happen to have to tools to fit them, you can get a local mechanic to fit them for you.

Club shop is probably best bet as Ian has all the necessary courier contacts to get parts shipped out.

Just one question Simon, is it just the first three that would fit the 2.5 diesel turbo 2wd 1997?

Yep, just the first 3. The photo cropping app on my iPad wouldn't quite let me chop all the others out so I included all the belts for all 3 engine types.

The info is from the compatible parts database so may be a bit out of date.

Is it wise to change the aircon belt at the same time or is that an unnecessary complication? Also, recall that the correct v-section belt should be fitted to avoid straining and splitting the pulley, though I imagine the BF one should be the right spec. Good luck getting it sorted.

Am I correct to assume the van section means it fits snug into the recess / groove on the pulley wheel?
My aircon works well so reluctant to change anything there.
I had a new alternator last summer which I suspect disrupted the fan belts and caused the problem with the belt.

Now getting paranoid about the can belt though the Talivan has done 107000 miles and last had cam belt change at about 65000.
Is there an easy way to check it / know when it needs a change?

I think the aircon belt has to come off anyway to fit fan belts and from memory the cam belt should be replaced at 60 000 miles or five years, whichever is first.

There isn't really an easy way to inspect it s far as I know.

A note of caution, check the tensioner pully - mine ceased on a trip last week, causing the belt to "rub" on the tensioner rather than "roll" with it. This in turn caused the belt to heat & eventually fail - loosing the power-steering (no big deal), but also loosing the alternator (very big deal).

Bearing was £3.00, belt was £15. Time to install 15 mins.

For info my bearing was 47 mm outside diameter, 17 mm inside diameter & 14 mm deep.

Replacement is a doddle - drop the tensioner unit, remove the pully, heat & punch out the ceased bearing with (I think) 22 mm socket - punch in new (again after heating) with 25 mm socket.

Also, I cleaned the outside of the pully with steel wool, as the rubbing had built up a lump of burnt rubber.

You should be able to obtain the belts locally. The alternator belt dimensions are 13 x 1100. The aircon belt is 13 x 1000. The cam belt is part number Blueprint ADM57526, this also fits Ford Ranger.

Interval is 60,000 miles / 60 months (5 years) so you have approx. 18,000 miles left or whatever remains of the 60 month period. Visual inspection wont really help much so just replace it as per the schedule and you should be fine. Also change the tensioner & spring too.

Re: aircon belt, I personally would change it & alternator belts at the same time for several reasons. It's easier to track when they are next due, you have to remove the alternator belts to get the A/C belt off & if any one belt breaks, it can tangle round a pulley which can take out the other two. On some vehicles (not the Bongo) when the serpentine belt snaps it can get damage the cambelt cover which then cause the cambelt to snap with expensive consequences.

Got to get the alternator belts done tomorrow when they arrive. Ordered 4 at €7.50 each, so will fit one pair and keep the other pair as spares.
Will have to sort the cam and maybe also the aircon when I get home in a few months.

Doing anythign here is difficult it is so cold at the mo and it is dark at 4pm when I get down off the mountain.
That said I will ask about the aircon and cam belt set as things are obviously so cheap here.

Managed to get the new pair fitted.
The only difficult part was removing the aircon belt as the nut holding the tensioner in place wouldn't budge.
