Bongo Fury

Evening. So just fitted new pump and nothing. Fuel coming out from pipes but not even close to firing. At a bit of a loss of what to do. I was going to time the pump by ear.it should still fire or have life in it if it's not correctly timed???

I would thought timing it by ear is a bit hit and miss. Can you not set the timing statically just to get it running? What's the history on the pump: has it been refurbished or just taken from another vehicle?

I just bought it from bongo spares it's used but tested. Right going to sound solid now but how do i set it static? Any help would be really appreciated!

If you have all the timing marks in the right place and fuel coming out the injector pipes then it should start.

However, it is possible to fit the pump and not locate the dog correctly in the drive pulley, everything can spin but the pump is not actually turning.

The static set up would be about right anyway as the injector pipes would need bending to change.

The pump is set up in much the same way as one used to set up contact points manually by moving the distributor. [Showing my age now eh]

The set up uses a DTI gauge into the rear of the pump. I have a kit to do this.

I have replaced the pump on my Bongo, started pretty well straight away.

Interesting. I ensured the woodruff key located and fuel is coming out using the leak off method on top of the injectors but not even close to getting a fire. Before i removed the old pump i could pretty much twist it anyway and made no real difference to the running it was just a noisy pump. Battery on charge overnight now and my booster pack as run them both flat messing about trying to start it!

Did the supplier give you the test results/figures.

And what about that quickstart spray stuff just to get it to fire. Is it possible the engine will pull fuel through the empty pump chambers by itself if it can just briefly get up to a decent RPM?

Hmm good call there mate. Straight into the plenum? And bypass the intercooler etc?

You can spray the easy start in anywhere on the air intake but ideally downstream of the air filter, just take off which ever hose is easiest to access. Don't go nuts with easy start, just a few short bursts of the spray as the engine is turning over.

Ok cool, going to check timing 100 percent using the bellhousing method rather than mirrors. Prime the system as much as possible and then use the carb cleaner to try get her started.
