Bongo Fury

This may well become an issue in the future so I thought I would start a thread, has anyone ever even heard of a company that could do this kind of custom job on a bongo ?

Why....

The time of the diesel may be over. It's already happened in Germany where diesels are banned from city centres unless they have particulate filters fitted. Paris and London will be next. Edinburgh and Leeds and other UK cities are giving it active consideration. And on Monday the European Environment Agency said they would like to see the phasing out of all diesel vehicles across the EU by 2020.

DPF requires an automated regeneration system which would cost thousands to retrofit and would be a completely uneconomical exercise on an older vehicle.

Sounds like I'll just have to continue to use the Bongo as I always intended...........heading away from town and into the countryside.

But seriously, are you really saying diesel Bongos will not be able to use the roads in a few years time?

I can see the price for the auld Horse and Cart going through the Roof.

Maybe using veg oil is not such a bad idea, at least you don't pay tax to those thieving scoundrels at the top just to potentially be told: "Whilst you have been filling our pension coffers and salary increases with your hard earned fuel tax payments (the most expensive Diesel in Europe I may add) we have decided to either tax you once again or devalue your vehicle to the tune of it's full value and then some". FWIW they are also thinking of extending LEZ to petrol cars as well and making petrol vehicles pay £12.00. Whatever you do you get stuffed in the end.

But the Diesel issue is a little scary. Can we then assume every HGV (running on diesel) that keeps the entire European economy to be down the junk yard as well ? I think not. Someone in the EEA is clearly being thick as 2 planks with regards to banning HGV's in 6 years. Goodbye international transport of goods and the economy with it.

Why not put the onus on fuel refineries to produce cleaner fuels through scientific research after all it is arguably their demerit goods that are helping to pollute. Stop the issue at source.

Oh no I forgot big business won't pay will it, nah us idiots will do that instead.

I personally cannot see it happening, the cost to small business and individuals will be immense, there would surely be uproar.

Maybe diesel particulate filters would drop massively in price should every diesel that exists have to get one installed.

I think this thread might grow in importance despite it all being speculation and conjecture at this point in time. So I will start adding some links and info, this place does custom DPF installs:

That is NOT going to be cheap.

To quote:

"A custom made DPF filter for the 2011 Mazda 6 2.2D will be just £695.00 +Vat (including Fitting Labour + Programming). The main dealer will want in excess of £2000 +Vat to do the complete job."

I cannot imagine there being much change out of £1,500.00 for Bongo as a custom jobby.

There has been a request to make this into a 'sticky' topic so it stays at the top of the forum. If this develops into a useful thread then we can do that. Unless it becomes legislation to be fitted then I'm pretty certain Bongo owners don't have much to worry about. As grey imports, we already are exempt from several things that would otherwise increase the running costs such as emissions based taxation, so I'd be surprised if anyone is ever compelled to have one installed.

Agreed...let's wait and see...It looks like it's only in the "thinking about banning" stages at the moment.
Let's think about this logically...Germany has managed (almost) to assume leadership of the EU, and with a little back-up from France they manage to steer every EU citizen's financial capability.... Fresh from failure to influence the consumer household product market with German produce (Japan and China "Rule-O.K." ) , the only thing left for Germany is car production....and as they sell A LOT of diesels in Europe, they aren't about to let production of said engine drop like a brick...(unfortunately, as I prefer the taste of petrol in the air ) ...plus it would be very hard to stop trucks using diesel...so...far better that we consider , somehow, registering the Bongo as a "classic" for the purposes of insurance, as it's coming of age next year, and 20 years is something of a recognition point in some quarters in terms of "classic"...although not official.
Bring the Bongo into that status, and whatever diesel may be around in a few years hence, may be available to "classics" on a voucher....but....in the mean time, it won't be likely that diesel cars will just be thrown away...it would put second-hand German cars into a worthless category, and people would most likely shift allegiance to Japan!....

Just watched a a programme on C4 about Diesel engines, nothing you are not likely to not know about:

I appreciate that the nitrogen dioxide emissions are higher and that is bad for health. Though you need to factor in greater MPG from the same amount of fuel vs petrol. Although what I do not quite believe is how you can tar all drivers with the same brush. Are buses and HGVs going to be banned from town centres ? No, and they have by far the largest engines and gross inefficiency crawling through traffic at 0-20mph (relatively most polluting rev ranges vs distance traveled) in the very areas where others will be forced to cough up or stay out. Neither is mention of the fact that some people service their diesel engine carefully and regularly and others do not.

Driving style is of course a factor as is age of car. No doubt there will be the usual, easy standard blanket way of dealing with these things which hit our pockets/lifestyles.

Of course it is bad news that diesels do have more noxious chemicals pouring out but petrol pollutes as well just in a different manner. CO2 was the buzz word years before now NO2 is the evil.

The real issue which is still not being addressed is LPG has not been pushed in the way it should have been and the government has not supported green vehicle manufacturing in any way, shape or form. Once again we shall pay for the failure of government to remove short term-ist obstacles related to being drip fed oil products and no subsidy for scientific research in greener auto technology.

It is a very complex problem and not an easy one to solve without essentially the collapse of society as we know it. It's a bit of a pickle.
