Bongo Fury

It's just an endless stream of issues, most minor.

But after the engine change I've not been convinced the Bongo is not losing some water. Now I'm convinced it is losing water.

The outside of the thermostat housing is very wet. I've replaced the pipes into it with jubilee clips, but it's still leaking. I'm guessing I'll be getting the housing seal replaced now. Bummed off.

The rubber seal round the thermostat is the gasket that joins the two halves of the housing. If the 'stat was missing it would leak round this joint.

It's just had a new stat fitted, so I'd hope not!!!

Has the correct stat been fitted and was it fitted correctly?

It was done by ADS so I'd hope so. waiting a call from them so I can take it in & get it looked at.

Could be the Jubilee clips, they're not recommended for Bongo hoses.

ADS Know their stuff though.

Really? I would have thought jubilee clips would be better than the awful spring clips

Bing! Repetition - we've had this discussion already.

The awful spring ones are OEM and going strong after 20 years on my old Bongo, but JCs seem to get you out of trouble with old hoses refitted to old joints. Just watch out for plastic stubs where JCs may crack the old plastic. Some Bongo people had a lot of trouble too with leaks when using JCs with silicon hoses: they kept settling and needing re-tightening (?on the softer silicon hoses)

The best clamps for your hoses are NORMA constant pressure clamps.....these allow for the different expansion rates of all the components that make up a hose to stub joint.

I'm just praying the leak from the 'stat is the sole reason it's losing water.

The pressure cap is designed to vent out at 1.1 bar (around 16psi) are the correct two pressure cap fitted ??

Normally after a coolant component change a garage will pressure test the system to visually check for leaks .. but generally while the system is cold .. to me, some leaks seem to occur with the cold / hot / cold expansion / contraction when in use ..

Personally, I'd alway use a new stainless steel Jubilee / worm drive clip in preference to a 20 year old rusty spring clip. They've been used in the motor industry for decades.

Looks like the leak is definitely coming from the thermostat housing as suspected. Thectoo half is very wet and tgere is steam rising from the seal area at about 82c and above.

Dropping it off tomorrow evening forvADS to check it out first thing Thursday.
