Bongo Fury

bongo has started getting lumpy on start up then after warm perfect.

I changed the glow plugs bout 2 months ago.

from what i read on here maybe the glow relay of cold start solinoid.

But iam not sure what to try 1st or in what order to try and work out the problem.

Try connecting a bulb or multimeter to the power rail for the glow plugs to check you are getting a supply. It should stay on for a while after the glow plug light goes off. Do the revs start high & then drop down after a short while? That would indicate the cold start solenoid is ok.

tbh the cold start relay has never worked propperly since we have had bongo.

Its never run high then drop down,and drops a bit when ac is on too


from what you say it could be a relay issue..will have a play .

I read on one of the glow plug threads here that giving the plugs two cycles, ie switch on until light goes out, do it again and starting is much smoother.
It's worked every time for me and no smoke when she fires up, no lumpy idle, and revs settle at low level within seconds.

I used to do this with my Citroen BX but only in the winter when temperatures were extremely low.

tested the power to the glow plug bar..11.5 volts and after light goes out the power satays on for maybe 10-15 seconds..

so would looking at the cold start solinoid be next move?

had new glow plugs only 2 months or so ago.

the egr is blanked off and the vac pipe that goes to the egr has been always blocked off with a screw.

one thing i will mention,prob nothing is the the air intake duct from air filter box(the bendy one) has a split in it and ive got tape round it at the moment wonder if that would make any difference?

Mine starts lumpy from cold and fine warm, Iam 99% certain mine is due to a slight leak at the fuel pump allowing air into the system on startup. Could yours be fuel related? Pump dry? Injector leak off pipes ok? Just another avenue for you to try.

11.5 v seems real low to me

The voltage at the glow plug rail is reduced as the glow plugs are 11volt rated.

the egr is blanked off and the vac pipe that goes to the egr has been always blocked off with a screw.make sure there are no leaks before this screw, if there is a vac leak the cold start solenoids wont work when they should, check the pipes all the way back to the vac pump, remove each pipe as they can rub through behind the pump or along the rocker line. the connections to the solenoids also break off.
