Our coolant fluid level is in the middle between max and min we are about to embark on a big trip to france, spain and belguim, i know this can be an issue with the coolant (van is a petrol v6) does anyone have any advice on what to do, do we fill it up? if so what with? bought a coolant alarm but not had chance to get it fitted yet

When was it last checked - how many miles since then? Has anything happened to loose coolant - dripping down the overflow from the header tank or over flowed when header tank cap removed (system pressurising)?

Most importantly, fit the coolant alarm before you head off on your travels.

Top up the header tank, not the radiator.
