spare wheel cage - what size wheels will fit

Hi,
I currently have no spare wheel cage on my bongo - but the spare wheel i have is the wrong size compared to the wheels and tyre circumference i have on it currently - therefore unusable.
I have 17" rims and am looking to put lower profile tyres on so i can get a bigger than normal tyre to put on my 15" spare to get a matching circumference as i need new tyres and also hate driving with no spare.
How much room is there in a spare wheel cage, am i likely to get the spare to fit if i locate a cage to buy?
thanks for any help
Jodie

There's no cage, just a cable winch with a bracket on the end which engages with the hole in the middle of the wheel. It is operated by the handle in the toolkit through an oval hole in the rear of the car.
If the tyre is the same diameter as a standard wheel then there should be enough space to winch it up. So the thing to consider is will the winch engage properly in the hole in the centre of your wheel - probably best to try for size before buying

Go careful with the choice of 17" tyres due to matching to the 215/65/15 standard rear tyres. Many put this tyre all round on a 4wd Bongo.
Here is a Visual Tyre Calculator where you can check out sizes against the originals... closest for 17" rims are 225/50/17 or 225/55/17. The 50's have a load rating of 98 and generally the 55's have load ratings of 101, both sizes are suitable for the Bongo....you just take your preference...
Spare wheel..... a standard 15" wheel/tyre combination is fine as it will match the 17"s you will have ....and the skinny wheel you have is a get you home type spacesaver wheel which many current cars have.
Many owners who upgrade to larger wheels.... sell off their standard wheel/tyres for use as spare wheels for those with bigger rims

I picked up a very good steel wheel from a local Bongo dealer for £10, a good 215/65/15 tyre from a Bongo-owning friend, and had it fitted/balanced by my local garage. It is now hanging happily where before there was a skinny.
