Help!!!

Post by Nikki » Wed May 07, 2014 12:59 pm

Hi everyone,

I have owned a bongo for a couple of months and recently had a overheating issue and was wondering if someone can help me with ideas for me to get my husband to check.

It seemed to happen as the gears were late in changing through the lower gears and would not change at all into the higher ones. This is a bit hit and miss atm as sometimes it work fine but I don't want to leave it to get any worse.

Any ideas are much appreciated. Also if anyone knows of any garages close to york I can go to that know bongos as my usual mechanic does not have much knowledge of them.

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi
First things first...check the transmission dipstick....if the fluid isn't clear, change the fluid and clean the internal filter (involves dropping the sump-pan on the transmission)....there is a fact sheet in the Members Area

Is the hold light flashing and/or is the speedo erratic? That would suggest problem with gearbox speed sensor. Another possibility is the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) on the injector pump (assuming it is a diesel engine) as this tells the gearbox what the accelerator pedal is doing.

if its a diesel first things to try would be change the fuel filter, this can make the engine labor, fooling the engine into working hard so selecting or holding lower gears. also check/clean the banjo filter which is in the pump top where the fuel pipe comes into the pump.

both cheap fixes which may help or even cure.

check the temperature sensor, when cold the box will not change to "top gear"

Thanks for all your help and suggestions everyone. I will start working through them and hopefully it is not anything too bad (I was worried it was something worse)!

It is a 2.5 diesel and we have not had anything done on the braking system recently. The hold light is not flashing and the speedo seems fine.

This sounds odd to me. First, just to make sure this can be ruled out, it is normal for a Bongo not to change right up the gears when the engine and gearbox are cold - say for the first 5 mins of driving if really cold. Second, a Bongo should not overheat simply because the gears won't change up. You should get it checked out asap in order to avoid expensive damage. If you're not technically minded and familiar with Bongos, you could do with a nearby garage that is. I heard there was one in Thirsk but you'd need to check that out - search in here and also Google. Also, autoboxes are a specialism in their own right, Bongo or not. Good luck, keep us posted.

We had been driving about 30 minutes when it happened. It works fine for a while and the temperature was fine and as soon as it stopped changing gear the temperature went up. It happened twice and then was fine the rest of the way home, it could be a coincidence though.

I would like to know a bit about bongos myself as I think it does help to but I am not technically minded at all so I have booked it in to a garage that is mentioned on here to have a look at it. Better to be safe than sorry, I have only just got it and have lots of trips planned for it. :D thanks again

I have finally got my bongo back from the garage but the only fault they could find were the brakes sticking. I had the do a coolant change anyway and I have been out today in it without any problems.

I think I will be keeping an extra close eye on it for a while but hopefully everything is now ok.

Thanks again everyone.

That was the first thing that came to mind,

Quote....Nikki , have you done Any work to the braking system lately?.

Did the mechanic tell you why the brakes were binding, there is a particular fault that can occur with this breaking system.

I know i naively did not realise the lights had anything to do with the actual brakes but lesson learned! He said the brake light switch had been over adjusted....another lesson learned is not to attempt what you think is a small job!

Exactly, there is more to"" Motor Mechanics"" than meets the Eye.

For the benefit of others who might find this problem, what is the link between work on the brakes and the gears revving but not changing up? Tried to work this one out but failed to find the connection.

You say you have little practical knowledge, but, you managed a coolant change, that is a big step. Did you bleed the system properly ?? Very Very important.
