AFT not going up

Hello good people of Bongo Fury

We've had our lovely bongo for a few years now and had very few issues. I've just been fitting a solar panel to the roof and in order to run the cable, I needed to put the roof up. The roof hasn't been up since last summer and it's going nowhere fast. It's beeping when I press the up button but seems stuck.

So far I've done the following:

- Removed the center console and cleaned the micro switch on the handbrake (the brake light was on anyway)
- I've had a good look at the fuse and it looks fine.
- As part of the spring service I was doing, I replaced the drive battery anyway (and it's turning the starter motor over brilliantly and starting first time).
- The engine is running and I've pressed the lock cancel button
- The roof light comes on (on the dash), when I press the 'up' button but alas, the roof stays where it is.

I'm not hearing the motors make any noise at all (there's usually a slight squeak from the back as things get moving)

Its a side conversion so before I take all of the cupboards out to remove the trim on the drivers side pillar, I wanted to make sure I'd exhausted all other potential issues. I'm based in Aylesbury Buckinghamshire so if there is a Dr Bongo close by, I'm keen to get it fixed.

Thanks

James

check the rubber seal around. if the roof hasnt been up this can cause sticking which the motor cant overcome. known from experience by myself, had to get inside and really push on roof to assist

This is how mine went. I had one motor replaced with a 2nd hand one which fixed it for a bit. The real cure was 2 expensive new motors. And of course you need help and the right skills to get the roof free to get at the motors. There is now a fact sheet on how to refurbish the motors if you have the time and patience. That would save a lot of money.

A remote chance, but this happened to me once in France...roof wouldn't go up, seemed really sluggish..then I realized. I had the fans on full and aircon on plus radio etc...turned all that off and no problem...so try to make sure anything draining power is off to give every chance.rev the engine up and good luck! Got any very steep hills you could park on to get the roof more verticle as a head start?

I would definatley check the rubber seal as suggested by dreamwarrioruk. It does stick to the van with lack of use. get a set of steps and feel all the way round. It might just be enough to get it to move. there is some rubber revival spray you can buy which is reported to work wonders on hardened seals, Softening them up and given them a second wind. I will check the name and post a link. For some time I was convinced my sluggish roof was down to lubrication issues. Until I stripped the motors down and realised how much moisture can get in. They were in real state inside, cleaned them up and the roof shoots up now.If you're handy at d.i.y. its worth considering. Its tricky but follow the fact sheet like a recipe and you should be ok and save yourself £300. The fact sheet is in the members area under " Roof motor repair"

The name of the spray that should help soften the roof seal if required is 303 Aerospace Protectant

When I bought my bongo it was the same the roof wouldn't go up for the guy as it had not been used in several months, I think I was lucky as I removed the connections at the rear panel and powered the units straight from the battery and the motors started working and reconnected the ECU and it has been fine for the last two years.
I know it will be a pain getting to it for you, but maybe you could do a panel hatch if it's going to be hidden behind the cupboards any way?
Got to be worth a try.
