Hi Guys
The mechanics at work are going to swap out my old broken auto box and replace it with a nice shiny second hand one in the next couple of days

. They were wanting to know before they got started if the torque converter lifts out at the same time as the box or is removed separately??

Any auto gearbox I've ever done has always been unbolt the t/c from the flex plate ,then box and converter back in together, this is so you don't damage the pegs for the oil pump that's driven off the t/c

Well guys that's the gearbox swapped out and second hand one in. Got it off BongoSpares excellent delivery times and the guys at work are saying it was in very good condition. They managed to (2 guys working on it) swap the old one out and new one in in 1hr 40mins. They were quite pleased with the time it took and said fitted perfect

Did the gearbox come with torque convert or ?did they take out the box with the t/c on it?

Replacement box came all intact with TC attached the guys said it was the easiest replacement they have ever done. Lots of room to get to everything and all the bolts came off really easy

Did they clean the filter and check the sump magnet for great chunks of metal? The amount of 'fur' stuck to the magnet will give an indication of the general condition of the gearbox. If you still have the old unit, it may be worth salvaging the filter which can then me thoroughly cleaned out with solvent or petrol so it can be swapped with the one in the replacement 'box.

ALWAYS remove & refit an automatic transmission with the torque converter correctly installed into the pump of the transmission. NEVER bolt the converter to the drive plate & fit the 'box to it. I replace 2-3 broken pumps & converters a month in transmissions where they have been incorrectly fitted.
You will of course get away with it on rare occasions

& I'm sure someone will now pop up here & say that is how they have always done it & never had a problem etc etc.
I would hope they cleaned the oil cooler & lines out correctly as well as the sump & filter. Debris from a previous failure that was in the oil cooler has caused the demise of many a replacement unit when not cleaned out properly.
