Engine temperature

Hi guys
I have just fitted a TM2 combi Haydn alarm and all works well. My question is what is the normal average engine temp for a 2.5 diesel. The temperature showed 92 at one point, just seemed a bit high to me, coolant level is ok and the sensor it mounted in the recommended place in the instructions. Any thoughts or advice would be great.
Cheers
Barry

Felt the same when first fitted mine. Normal pootling around temp on mine is 87-91. Heavy traffic, steep hills it can climb quite alarmingly (I have the alarm set at 96) and peaked once at 101, but it didn't boil over. I'm told that boiling point is higher than 100C because of the antifreeze..can't tell what that would actually make boiling point though, anyone else know?
Perhaps Haydn can tell us what is a 'safe' maximum temp?

A 50/50 mix of water and Ethylene Glycol has a freezing point of -37degC and a boiling point of 106 degC.

Antifreeze typically contains Ethylene glycol which on its own has a boiling point of 197 degress C, plus having the coolant under pressure also raises the boiling point. On my diesel Bongo, I had my TM2 set to around 98 which seemed about right. I think I probably reached that once getting to the top of a dormant volcano in Germany while fully loaded with camping gear. See how it reads normally & then tweak the setting to a couple of degrees above your normal maximum. Bear in mind there is no magic temperature where things melt into a smouldering pile of goo, you're just looking to spot changes based on what is normal for your vehicle.

Hi guys
Thankyou all for your replies, and putting my mind at rest. We went for another 40 mile drive and it sat at 92 again, so will take that as the average for our engine.
Thanks again for all you help.

Most OAT like Car Plan Premium Red et al have a Boiling point of 130c .... temp point for switching on Bongo Fans to double speed is 108c

You have 2 things which affect the boiling point.......coolant mix and pressure....
Your TM-2 is reading fine, I always set mine at 100C ( as supplied ) and when towing uphill it has reached 105C......nothing to worry about....I think you will find the critical point when you should worry is about 110c on the TM-2 with the sensor placed as recommended.
