Bongo Fury

So instead of telling you our long story of woe, i'll get right to it and ask about getting a replacement engine put in.

We've been quoted £3500 to get it done, it's a 2.5td 95 engine, and looking to get it done for a lot less than that.

Has anyone used these guys or a similar outfit and got good things to tell me?

We're based in Scotland, so any tips for places to try up here would be gratefully received. If there's a thread covering this topic already, feel free to point us in the right direction.

That seems high to me, 2 grand would seem more like it, unless you have a pretty fancy conversion that price would look like a write off and break or sell the salvage.

Others will soon have some good points.

No experience of that supplier but the advert does sound quite good. Only thing I would pick them up on is their description of the engine being "EFI". Only the petrol engines have electronic fuel injection: it is a mechanical injector pump on the diesel variant.

was going to go with these people when my bongo went hiss,i couldn't find much about them on the net,i don't know your full story but i got in contact with this chap (see my post in head gasket) if he can not do the job he will give you good advice

One of our members bought a secondhand engine from www.bongospares.co.uk (phone George on 07836 598528). Don't be put off that they're in West Yorkshire, the guy on here who bought it is in South Wales, it turned up palletised and properly protected for transport and by all accounts was the real deal

Good shout, but they might need to palletise George also as they want a supply and fit..

Yes...George is definitely worth dealing with. Highly recommended!
On another note, as Bongos are pretty well established as an ongoing favourite, I have often thought that there's a market for a GOOD engine re-conditioner, with quality short-motors, and complete heads to go on top with new cam and gear, as a fully recon. unit, or as separate items...after all, most other major bits are obtainable as reconned spares...such as fuel pumps, etc.

did the contract mechanics guy sort your problem out in the end?

that's where the £3500 quote has come from. I'm sure they would do a splendid job, but it's way more than we can afford to pay.

Hi Dave, my engine went bang so I contacted George at bongospares, awesome and so glad I did, he sent me a superb engine with lads of stuff still on it, it was packed up on a pallet like a crimbo prezzie and was as it came out of the donor, I mean not washed to hide any leaks etc, my fitter was very impressed with it and it is running like a dream, low mileage as well, well worth a phone call, I cannot recommend him enough, lovely chap to deal with as well, I ordered it and it was delivered to my nominated fitters garage within two days.
