How to tell if a Bongo has ABS or not

Hi all,

I have what may be a ridiculous question. I have a 96 v6 E-SG5W model. I looked up the model and ABS was an optional extra. I have no ABS light on the dash (none that I can see and none that lights up when I start the van). There is also no perceivable brake pedal judder either when I brake hard. Basically I want to know if it has ABS and someone deactivated it due to a fault or it never had ABS to begin with (ironically my preferred result!).

Thanks

You would have an ABS pump under the bonnet - don't remember exactly where it is although I seem to recall its on the passenger side bulkhead somewhere.

This is what it looks like: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mazda-Bongo-a ... 3a8b87ea10

I am pretty sure I have not seen the pump as pictured on Ebay. I will double check though.

Thanks

If you look around the area under the heater fan plastic cowl under the bonnet.also look behind your road wheels as the driveshaft goes through the hub you'll see a ring with teeth on it this is the abs ring.when you turn the ign on there should be a light that illuminates for 15/30seconds then goes off once started.to test abs on a road with NO vehs behind you go to about 20mph and stand on foot brake and the pedal should (rattle)under your foot ie judder this is the abs in operation

Hi, yep, found it. It does not have the black covering on it but given it's says "Nippon ABS Ltd" it gives it away a bit. Shouldn't the ABS light come on when you first turn the ignition on and then go off once the engine has started?

Thanks

Hi, sorry, I just seen "the Lairds" post. No, no light comes on. I have never had any brake judder however I must admit I do not think I have ever stamped on the brakes that hard. I will try it but I am thinking it's been disabled. I am concerned about opening up a can of worms.... :-(

Yes, the "ring of teeth" are there also.

Thanks

under the bonnet is a fuse for abs, check its in place etc. non abs bongo's still have the place for a fuse but is not fitted.

There are TWO fuses required;
The first one powers the actuators

and below powers the electronics.

We have ABS and the only time its been noticed is on an icy hill, it should only operate when the two wheels are turning at different speeds and breaking is underway.
