trouble starting but not electrics..........

Binga Banga is poorly and struggling to start......
Every time I try to start the engine it takes a minimum of 2 attempts. It turns over fine, and all lights/electrics etc are working but I need to pump the accelerator to get it to ‘catch’. It is usually 2 attempts but occasionally would take 3. and when it does catch it’s a bone-shaker. However this morning it took 5 goes :(

And when I say ‘every time’ that’s exactly what I mean – cold, warm, wet, dry – it makes no odds. And if I have driven home from work (20 odd miles), stop at Sainsburys for 2 minutes and start again – the same problem, so it’s not just that the engine is cold.

I had the second battery replaced a while ago but that did squat to sort the problem and all electrics are fine - lights mirrors etc. so don't think it can be the electrics

It may be unrelated but on my way up to town last Thursday, having driven for about 40 mins the engine started juddering slightly when I slowed down and shortly after cut out completely when I had to slow down to take a left turn………and on cold mornings it is very sluggish – pressing the accelerator does very little and then suddenly whoosh, she’s off. It also cut out this morning on the garage forecourt but it was first thing........

Conversely, last winter, even in extreme cold, the engine would (start first time &) just rev very high (up at about 2500+ rpm doing 40mph) until it got into its groove and then the revs would drop back to normal. which I understand is totally normal.

anyone??

Assume it's a diesel? If so, what colour smoke to you get when it starts?

Hi deevdaav,
it would be worthwhile checking to see if the vehicle is fitted with a Cold start exhaust Valve System.

If this system goes T up it can give this type of problem/fault.

Good Luck.

is it a diesel, and an early one, does sound like the diesel pump is sucking air in.-------stalling/cutting out/bad starting. this is usually the front nose seal which is an easy job to do one the pump is out, is it due a timing belt?? if it is then it would be a good time to maybe both.

Thanks everyone. Yes it's a diesel, 1996. I haven't noticed any smoke of any colour bit to be fair I'm usually starting at stupid o,clock in the morning. . It might have a cold start thingy as I think the second battery is for that and there are lots of Japanese skiing stickers on it!

How would I check if it has the cold start system?
Also how long should a timing belt last and I can check my records to see when/if it had been changed.
Thanks all, really appreciate.

The cold start system has TWO batteries, linked by a thick cable, and a switch down by the drivers knee with a engine and heat symbol on it, this operates the gate in the exhaust system that forces the hot exhaust back around the engine.

If you have a cold start system you will have a switch on the dash (right in picture).

Cam Belt should be changed at 100,000 kms. If it was changed in Japan there should be some yellw paint on the cam cover.

Right. have checked and there is smoke and it's white. And as I don't have that button, I don't have the cold start system.
we bought the bongo about 5 years ago so it's probably fair to say it's about time for a new timing belt.
so my check list would be:
glow plugs
front nose seal/timing belt

will keep you posted..............and thanks

Well it looks like the glow pugs are needing some attention.
What size do I need?? The garage has tried 3 sizes - all too short so easier for me to get from here I think.
Also it seems one of them is seized in the cylinder head. Any suggestions on the best way to release it so I don't have to deal with the trauma of replacing that!!
Thanks
