I agree. Mine has always liked a little TLC when starting in cold damp weather. I don't touch accelerator when starting or for a minute or so after starting. The old lump likes to warm a little before having any load put on it. Good practice for any engine to let it settle after starting when cold, before driving off.

Hi,Thanks for that I never considered the glow plugs as daisy's always started on the first turn of the key..and only runs "lumpy" after about 30sec......thanks again ...Paul

cold start solenoids or a weak starter battery.
the glow plugs stay on for a while after starting so may be killing a poor battery, put a meter on it while it starts and runs for the first minute or so.

chugging after 30 secs is usually the white plugged solenoid, to test just swap with the one next to it, it will chug for the first 30 secs then be ok after that.

for a quick test put 12v and a neg to the white plugged one then listen for a click, they are polarity conscious so try wiring both ways, if no click when wired, then removed, put wd40 down the pipe holes and leave to soak then tap with a metal gadget lightly, then re soak.

if you need a replacement they are on all mazda of similar age, petrols, fitted with egr valves. and early shoguns (its a Mitsubishi part).
