Dear Gurus

I have a 2002 Bongo that I drive most days. On a long journey recently the glow plug started flashing & my Bongo garage tells me that the error codes are P0400 & P1228. They are suggesting that the turbo itself might be the problem (although they say this is uncommon in vans that are used frequently) - but I am not so sure.

Here are the very reliable symptoms now: When I start the car the glow plug doesn't flash, and for around the first 10 mins of the journey the glow plug is off & the turbo appears to be working. Once the van is fully warmed up it seems, the glow plug starts flashing & the turbo stops working (it doesn't matter whether I have driven the van hard or gently during the warm up period). I am suspecting it might be more an issue with the waste gate than the turbo itself.

Has anyone got any bright ideas that I can feed to my garage to help sort this out? Many thanks in advance.

several hits with bongo error codes P0400 & P1228 in google point to the egr valve or gunk in the inlet from it

most issues with these newer fly by wire seem to come with bad sensors or wiring to them

I get the same codes on our 2001 diesel AWD but only when the engine's under load, such as a long slog up hill. I can prevent it from happening by crawling slowly up the hill.

The first garage that looked at it reported that the codes meant something like 'problem with cylinder number 8' so I clearly didn't progress this with them. I'm hoping to leave the van with Bell Hill garage at some point soon to take a look.

Another suggestion has been that one of the vacuum solenoids is dodgy, but I'm not sure which one. I am aware of a slightly uneven ticking sound when under load or at higher revs so this could be one of these valves...

I'll report back if and when I get this sorted, but it's not going to be for a few weeks at the earliest.
