now that I have your attention ....
does anyone have a pic of a bongo tailagte without the plastic strip (the bit with the handles reflective strip etc)
I've managed to crack mine in a reversing error

and I'm not sure if I should replace or go without it, I'm sure I saw a photo of one on here a while back but I can't seem to find it (or remember if it looked pants or not)

Bear in mind if you remove the handles and plastic trim, you be be left a number of mounting holes to fill and will need to track down the chrome trim panel to cover up the tailgate handle and reversing lamps. A lot of effort to go to to make it look really basic.
You can pickup the replacement parts quite cheaply:

Does this mean that the handles aren't bolted through the door?
I wont use them for towing any more!

On the 'proper' Bongos (:)) there are 4 x M6 threaded inserts for each handle fitted into the tailgate so they are pretty sturdy.
If you can get the trim panel with the handles from a breaker and don't mind drilling a number of holes in the tailgate then it's feasible to retrofit.
