This is right on my doorstep and very worrying. The latest I have seen is that it is similar to Alabama Rot, a disease that was found in Greyhounds in South USA. That was blamed on e.coli from feeding raw food. Not the full story in these cases, as this seems to be geographical rather then contaminated food.

The only thing the areas have in common is Lyme disease in ticks. I would never walk in the infected areas of the forest without boots and trousers, due to the risk. Even then you can pick up a tick on arms or neck walking through bushes. Dogs nosing around pick them up all the time.

Another possibility is something transmitted by the plague of rats around. There are always rats in patches of wood and scrub but with this amount of rain they are everywhere.
