Engine still running when ignition turned off

Sorry I am new to Bongos so may ask some obvious questions.

We have a 2.5 tdi 1996 bongo. When you turn the ignition off the engine keeps running for about 30 seconds- 1min. After looking online Some say this is a problem with the pump shut off solenoid and others say this is normal for a turbo Diesel engine to allow it to cool.

Any ideas?

It could be the shut off valve, it may also have a turbo timer fitted, check the exact time it takes from ignition off to engine off(a couple of times) if its exactly the same it will probably have an activated TT.

Sounds like a turbo timer fitted. Mine had a small box hanging in the driver's footwell, with a switch on it to turn it on or off. Useful after a long motorway thrash, but unnecessary for normal driving.

keep using it mate, it may help stop your exhaust manifold from warping and snapping the no1 manifold stud.

As said, lots of the imports have timers fitted, is there a beep when you turn off the ignition? and if it stays running for 30 seconds EVERY time then its a turbo timer, as Ady said they're quite useful bits of kit and can prolong the life of the turbo etc tho be aware some insurance companies dont like them as they're interfering with the function of the ignition.

Illegal to use with respect to section 123 of the Highway Code:

As Nath says, may cause insurance issues:

Unless you're in the habit of stopping and switching the engine off as soon as you come to a halt, then you're not going to save a lot of wear and tear on the turbo (IMHO).

In Scotland it is an offence to have your engine running unnecessarily whilst parked on a public road whether you are in the vehicle or not.

Also in the UK it is Illegal to use a Mobile phone whilst parked on a public road with the engine running, you are deemed by Mr plod as Driving.

All these laws make the TT irrelevant to its intended purpose.

Just a bit of useless information.
