Advice needed RE Alternater Issues

Hi there. Just wondering if anyone has come across this alternator issue before. I replaced the alternator on our 96 2.5 2wd Bongo about 2 weeks ago with a new one as the battery and sedement lights had come on. Alternator was only putting out 10v and could not be fixed. New one in and a healthy 13.5v at the battery again. This morning the battery and sedment lights came on again for a split second then went out whilst driving to work. Also noticed that they now do not alluminate at all when turning the ignition on during the lamp check so checked the voltage coming out of the new alternator and it's only putting out 11.1v. Going to ask for a replacement part but what is the story with the Battery and Sediment lights not working...fuse issue? I did notice that after fitting the new alternator that the battery and sediment lights were a bit dimmer when turning the ignition on during the lamp test. Really confused so any help appreciated.

Given that everything else is working on the dashboard, then there isn't a fuse problem!
The lights are driven directly from the alternator, so it suggests that there is a fault with the regulator setup in the alternator ... which you have already discovered!
I wonder if it is a genuine Bongo alternator ? Previously there were reports of non-standard diode packs being fitted capable of only 80Amps and not the full 90Amps on some of the refurbished alternators ?

Ok...yeah, my replace was non standard but was assured by the supplier it was fit for purpose and a direct replacement. They are getting me to do a couple of checks on it tonight before sending it back. It just seems really odd that the charge and sediment lights no longer light up at all....even with the supply from the alternator disconnected. More time with the multi meter tonight

My monies on the engine earth lead looking fine but having a bad connection or internally corroded, quick test, note the speed it cranks over at then put a good thick jump lead between the negative terminal and the exhaust manifold, if it turns faster the earth lead is faulty.
I have seen this a few times over the last few years

Thanks winchman. I will try this. However, I did put a new alternator in this morning and hey Presto charge and sediment lamp test now ok. Good charge over main battery as well. But...the charge and sediment lights are dim during the lamp test. Would this be a symptom of a poor earth?
Thanks in advance.
Tom.

Have you got a leisure battery & split charger? If you have a relay connected directly to the alternator, it can result in both those lights glowing dimly when charging.

Have just ordered a new replacement from AVA, is there where you got yours? Hoping I don't have a problem..

A poor earth can give all sorts of issues, I once had a Bedford CF camper that the last owner scrapped as he had fitted a couple of alts, several batteries, two garages had looked at it and couldn't sort its poor running and constant flat batteries out.
One earth lead and a second hand alt later and it was fine
