OBD scanners

Hi all,
Just out of interest I've been looking at OBD fault code scanners ( I need one for our MX5 ) and thought it would come in handy to check our new Bongo but I notice that is a different port 17 pin and not the 16 pin like on most cars.
I see you can buy a interface cable to enable the connection, has anyone used this type of cable or is there a reader with the correct socket available?
Thanks
Jeff

I bought an adapter (Mazda to OBD) and connected it to a generic code reader and nothing happened. For my Volvo, I've got a bluetooth one that I use with an app called Torque. More for pretty graphs and stats than diagnostics. Will try it on the Bongo one day, but very much doubt it will work.
Have a trawl thru these for further info:

The Bongo doesn't use the OBD standard not even version 1, they came out before the standard was created.

If you look thru those search results, you'll see Mikexgough uses this software on his Bongo:
http://forscan.org/. All you need is the appriopriate ELM327 adapter and a suitable laptop.

What model does he have? Japan didn't adopt EOBD until 2004 so it would have to be an early implementation. My 1995 hasn't even got those pins connected so the adapter couldn't work. There is a Mazda tool on eBay at the moment but it doesn't list the Bongo, possibly because its for the UK market.
What year and model is the MX5?

The protocols used started in 1994 on some Ford models.

I read some stuff about that a while ago that did seem to imply that if you don't have the pins in the Mazda connector then you may have a triangular shaped connector for the Ford protocol but I couldn't find one on my 2.5TD.

You should have one of these just under the glove box:

Yes I have one of those but the pins for the diagnostics aren't populated.

You have to make an adapter for the ELM, details are on the Forescan website.
I did it all earlier this year but then sold the Bongo so never got to try it out.

You can also buy a ready made lead to convert to standard connector:

Your Bongo looks like a later model as well so maybe the diagnostics were introduced in 1996, were there any other changes in the injection system at that time?

Doesn't work on a Bongo Simon.
I tried one without any success, took it to bits and the pins are wrong so I modded it but as I said previously never got round to trying it out properly. I suppose it must be for later model Mazdas.

In that case I've got one that needs modifying too
