Solder Butt Connectors

Post by Jaws » Mon Sep 23, 2013 12:20 am

That pesky broken wire in the door loom is one of the banes of Bongo ownership IMHO. Blessed with only the average number of hands I have wasted too many hours of my life trying to hold two bits of wire together in an enclosed space with limited access whilst simultaneously heating the joint and applying some solder. All this whilst trying not to heat the the rest of the loom or heat shrink sleeve to be slid over later... You get the picture.

So these little gems are just the ticket for one of the most frustrating jobs ever invented. I know they cost a bit but so does my time and patience. Now have a selection in the Bongo emergency kit along with a micro blow torch :D

Hi
'Tis a bit tricky, but I soldered the wires several times, applied heatshrink and wrapped the lot in self amalgamating tape before succumbing to a fine new loom from the Club Shop....good purchase, I must say!
One thing I can't find nowadays, which always was a good emergency kit in the car is"match solder", which was a solder tape which wraps round a join, and heated with a match or fag lighter...REALLY useful...now I can't find it anywhere!
Cheers

They look very useful, I wouldn't mind getting some of those. I replaced the door loom on mine but I wouldn't try and repair it in situ, once the door card and wheel well cover is off it is much easier to unplug the loom and repair it on the kitchen table and make the joints where they aren't flexing. Seems like a big job but I rustproofed inside the door and reglued the door skin to the strengthening bars at the same time.

I used to use a lot of those in the defence industry but they are no longer allowed, its difficult to inspect the quality of the solder joint and they aren't as reliable as they used to be before the introduction of unleaded solder. They can be good but should be used with caution.

I think it fell by the wayside when they banned leaded solder - unleaded solder needs more heat.

The trick with soldering wires is to get a big enough soldering iron.
If it's to small then the heat will radiate away up the wires before they get hot enough to melt the solder.

You would use a heat gun similar to the range of the one here.....

Hi
I have a range of heat guns, and this one is the best:

It's a good all-rounder for the car
