Bongo Fury

Hi everyone - can some one please enlighten me on the best kind of drive away awning for my Bongo?
Initially it will be used as the main cooking area throughout all seasons of the year.
I would appreciate all your valued experiences on ones we should consider and ones we should not consider.

We have a Royal Traveller 3.....steel frame .....very stable......ideal for our needs as a lounge/relax area......but it is the only awning we have had.....we used to sleep in the Bongo.
A lot depends on your needs......it is not a large living area for a larger family..... But I am sure that you will get more replies from people with more experience of awnings than us.

There are only two of us normally when camping.....

I have had a Royal Traveller 3 for several years and found it to be excellent ..

Plus points .. with an inner 'tent' one side forms a perfect space for a 'double' inflatable mattress .. and it is fairly easy to put up ..

Minus points .. with a tubular steel frame it is quite an heavy / cumbersome bit of kit ..

IMHO very simple choice. Either the convenience of the Quechua Base Seconds, dead easy to put up but doesn#t connect to the van or Khyam Motordome Classic. Also very easy, one person can put up, connects to van more space and can have inner tent. Nore expensive that Quechua.
No brainer, choose one or both and you won't go wrong.
No point looking at any others.

We have both, use Quechua for overnight stops and Khyam for longer stays.

Quechua's are ok if you can get em back in the bag.....

Royal traveller 2 for us.

search all the suggestions made here on google,watch the videos on youtube and you'll make a more informed decision

Khyam is a brilliant piece of design and a doddle to put up and down with it's preattached poles.
One person can do it.
Once you have the knack with the Quechua it too is a doddle

Without a doubt, IMHO, the only awnings worth buying...............and I've bought a few in my time...............

We have a Vango Kela Standard. Awesome in all weathers and spacious

We have a Kampa Travelpod drive away we used on our last motorhome and on the back of the car but decided we would prefer a more substantial awning so bought on ebay a DWT BREGENZ II. It is very similar looking to the Traveller, made in Germany. We have used it a couple of times now and love the space

Kyham kyham kyham - every time!

No faff with poles sliding in and out, coming apart and stretching elastic, ripping fabric etc. good strong poles fixed into the fabric so all you have to do is open it out and in literally a couple of minutes it's standing (bedroom poles do need fixing in but again good size poles with no elastic so slide in nice and easy!)

good ceiling height, doors in 2 sides as well as the van attaching side, 2 pod bedroom which could sleep 2 adults in each pod.

These Awning/tents are a bit more expensive but SOOO worth it.

After a long journey, we would dread putting up the awning we had before this one, invariably there was an argument and much huffiness during the put up and take down ( "you're pushing too hard" Don't pull- now the pole's come apart!, you're gonna rip it in a minute, stop telling me what to do!!!)
Now it's a joint effort and a cuppa in minutes as we sit and congratulate ourselves smugly on a great purchase!

Kyham drive away - if I had the money kyham east up would be my choice

No experience of any others, but we love our vango kela. So quick to put up..

Expensive & bulky / heavy when packed away, but very sturdy. Easier to put up with 2 people, but totally do-able on your own. I've got one but only tend to use it when I'm on site for a few days & need the extra space of the 3m x 3m footprint. Prefer Quechua Base Seconds in terms of speed, lightness & compact size, although it does not join up to the van. That's a project I've got on the list for a another day....
