Bongo Fury

Bongo is running well as ever. Tonight I took the drivers seat out and had a look down into the engine with a view to doing 1st gear oil change. I noticed some black oily deposit below the inlet maniford at the front. Dont thinks its the head gasket as cooolant integrity is sound

Has anyone changed maniford gaskets before and how difficult is it, ie is it a diy job or not? As i say its a minor leak if any as the negine is purring along nicely

good to hear. As i say it runs like a dream so ill leave be and keep and eye on it then.

Three common sources of oil around that area are:

- EGR pipe (inch or so steel pipe coming round from back of engine, over top of the injectors and into the elbow at the front of the inlet manifold)
- rocker cover gasket, up top
- camshaft oil seal at the front (oil dribbles down, and airflow blows it round the side)

As long as you're not losing oil at too great a rate, you can probably leave it. It'll keep the rust down.

Thanks Matt appreciate your input. As I mentioned above motor is running well so I'd loathed to tinker unless it's necessary

I had a leak in this area after my cambelt had been replaced, and it was the joint that is secured to the manifold by two bolts. I tightened them but still leaked. I then took out the bolts, - had to loosen two others to get the joint apart - and then took out the gasket. This gasket is a plastic type, so I cleaned it up as well as the facing surfaces with a clean cloth, and re assembled. This cured the leak. Cleaned area up with degreaser and everything back ok.

Some folk blank off the EGR to permanently resolve gunk at that joint - I did mine. Allans in Plymouth sell blanking plates for £12.50 a pair.
