Fuel Cut Off Solenoid

Post by Ian » Mon Aug 12, 2013 4:22 pm

OK chaps, listen up. One of the members is stuck in France with wife and 4 kids with a major problem. "Heath & Heather" stopped their diesel Bongo, put it in park, turned off the ignition, but the engine kept running! They eventually stopped it by strangling the fuel line. But they need a permanent fix so they can get home again.

The general opinion seems to be that it is a faulty fuel cut off solenoid, which is probably jammed open. So a few questions.

Image

1) Is the solenoid the part shown in the photo with the numbers on? If not, where is it?
2) Is it possible to mend it? Or will it have to be replaced?
3) If it has to be replaced, can someone point us to the lush projects page & part number?
4) If it can't be fixed or replaced, is the vehicle safe to drive back to the ferry terminal?
5) Is it possible to cut the engine off by deliberately stalling the engine?

All contributions gratefully received.....

The only real harmless way to stop the engine is to cut off fuel supply. The part will need replacing. Can't advise if its the part in the photo but do doubt someone will. Good luck.

Expect that they've tried this but jiggle the wires and tap around the solenoids case with a hammer to free it.
Personally, I'd fill up and drive home - after all, the alternatives are expensive and the risks aren't too bad

Fuel pump solenoid can be removed and take the plunger and spring out and refit ,the prob he's going to have is if its an auto he can't stop it as you norm stall by selecting top gear and letting the clutch out slowly,he would be able to do this but to stop he will have to starve the engine of fuel, this other than renewing the solenoid is his only way out,

Umbongo Cat and Chris had exactly this problem on a visit to France about three years ago. They stopped the Bongo by blocking the exhaust pipe with a trainer! Heading for home was the solution, but you have to stop the Bongo once on the ferry.

The round part with the number on is the TPS, but I dont have details of the where the solenoid is to hand.

UPDATE: here's a thread that mentions the solenoid:

You could try pulling fuse 9..??? (15amp blue) 1st one second row down...This should cut the engine?? Then just pop it back in when starting....

I'm sure i pulled this one by accident once by accident & cut my engine.....

Just been out to check & it does..!!

Sent heath a PM at 10am this morning with all the relevant information that they required regarding drawings and solenoid part number etc in response to the Pm that they sent me.

It would appear that they did not receive it.

Is it not possible to do a crude fix for now, like a g clamp on the fuel line?

The simplest thing to do if you know the script is to screw the throttle stop on the pump until the engine stalls, counting the turns as you go.then return (if you wish)to its original position.

I would recommend that the valve is removed and and the plunger/rubber valve and any debris is removed from the pump, then the solenoid body refitted,if left it could cause the vehicle to cut out at any given time.

This part is really a job for a mechanic unless you understand what you are doing.

PS, there must be a reason why they cant just get a new valve fitted (if this is the problem)these valve should be readily available, from most garages and factors.
