2003 Automatic Transmission Control Unit

Rick from Edinburgh has a major problem on his hands and using the collective strength of the Bongo community we hope to have it solved.

His vehicle, which was purchased privately a few months ago, is a 2003 (series 5) 4WD diesel Bongo with a camper conversion. As Rick (Rocketeer) said in a previous post:

"Speedometer going crazy and hold light flashing. Turns out on the post-1999 Bongos, the speedo signal comes from the ABS system/front wheel via the transmission control module rather than from the speedo sensor on the back of the transfer box as with older Bongos."

Mackie Transmissions of Glasgow, one of the top auto gearbox specialists in Scotland, discussed the situation with Bongo experts Dunnings of Weymouth and came to the conclusion that the transmission control module chip was faulty. This is an extract from page 6600B on Lushprojects; the unit is drawing number 18-9EO.

The Mazda part number is WLF8189E1A.

Here at Bongo Fury Mission Control we tried to obtain the part from Mazda UK, Mazda Japan, and contacts in the Phillipines, only to be told that "this part is no longer available". Eventually we managed to source a used part from Japan, pictured below.

Mackies installed the part, but this did not fix the problem. It's possible (although in my view unlikely) that the replacement unit has the same fault. It has been sent for analysis to find out if this is the case. I have also asked Dmitri (DemonAV) to ask the Russian owners if they have come across this before.

In the mean time Rick has an expensive vehicle sitting in a garage that he can not use.

Has anyone got any ideas?

If you have hold flashing, first you need to get the fault code.
It's easy.
Read the diagnostic code using the indicator "HOLD" on the dashboard.
1. Turn the ignition switch to "OFF".
2. Place a jumper between terminal "TAT" diagnostic connector and ground.

4. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON"
5. Once the indicator "ABS" on the instrument panel will light up for 3 seconds, the LED "HOLD" will flash, displaying fault codes.
6. Read the code as shown in the figure.

List of codes for RC4A-EL and RC4AX-EL (4WD):
-P0705-
-P0710-
-P0715-
-P0720-
-P0725-
-P0731-
-P0732-
-P0733-
-P0734-
-P0743-
-P0745-
-P0750-
-P0755-
-P0760-
-P0765-
-P0841-
-P0846-
-P1601-
-P1710-
-P1759-
-P1763-
-P1764-
-P1791-

But usually, when we have a problem with speedometer, we check all ground connections between meter and body, between gearbox and body Replacement of control unit is lastest.

Read fault code and check ground connections.

Mackies have contacted a guy who can repair the control unit, and I've found a company in England who can also repair the unit: http://www.autotekelectronics.com/autotek/?
so Bongo owners can breathe a sigh of relief!

The fault code from the hold light is flashing to say that the control unit is faulty. We'll find out in a few days if that's true.
My electronics expert friend Jim reckons that something is upsetting the unit: a bad earth, a faulty input, a loose connection etc.

One of these may be able to help, recommended by Honest John in the Telegraph for ECU repairs. The last one seems to have had good reviews.

Quite possibly, we had similar problems in heavy snow earlier this year gathering and freezing under the van and round the wheel hubs. When it had all melted the problem went away, must have shorted something out somewhere.

Just heard from the Garage, the Bongo is fixed! :D

They got an electronics expert to fix the transmission control unit, found a loose wire from the unit to the engine management system, and put a filter on the speedo to stop it jumping around.

Many thanks for everyone's help,

Rick
