Bongo Fury

Hi All,

I've not posted on here for ages which is good news as it means the Bongo has being doing well

Anyway I trust all are well

The steering wheel has started quivering - it sort of vibrates a bit when moving - more apparent around 40 mph

Do you reckon this may be tracking or wheel balancing or sumut more serious?

Hi Rob. Can't remember if yours is 4wd? Either way, I'd get it looked at. Could just be wheel balance but you don't usually notice that until at higher speed. Adrian in Bury is good plus reasonable on cost. But maybe you should get a local place to check it in case its something hazardous (you don't want to be motorway driving or going any distance if it is!). Good luck, keep us posted.

Hmm could be related to the 4WD then. Get yer tyres done (with balancing) then, if the wobble is still there, get specialist help. PM me if I can help (I'm between houses at present but will let you have my new address).

I have the same problem, on my V6, so it's not a 4 wheel drive problem on mine, and it's just been mot'd, also I removed my steels at the weekend and fitted new alloy wheels and tyre's which I bought from the Janner Vanner, no change, still the quivers. I have noticed however it only really happens on uneven road surfaces, and is not apparent doing 0-70mph on a motorway with a really smooth surface, although on motorways with a slighly rutted surface you feel a slight vibration, could it be a shock absorber problem? It is a quiver/vibration similar to balancing problems.

Could be several things.....
I guess the steering fluid would be the place to start, level up and in good nick.... as the pump maybe causing that kind of "feel" too

If you have alloys.... you have spigot rings.... then go for Track rod ends/bottom ball joints... as last items on the list.
If you haven't had the bottom joints done and they are original or old then they could be on their way out....not bad but getting worn.... they slightly "knock" over some surfaces when fully gone....

I feel it most going over uneven surfaces, worst is goin over these rumble strips at roundabouts or entering speed restricted Zones, on on the anti slip surface they put on bends, it seems to make contact, and react vibrating several times similar to a balancing problem, had it on my steels and Alloys with little difference in the symptoms.
I will have a look at the weekend at all recommendations.

try some power steering pump/system cleaner/re conditioner, sounds like the vanes on the pump sticking or the internals of the rack.

Thanks Ady, will give it a try, can't believe both sets of tyre's are out of balance, also MOT'd last week, by a good garage who do a thorough inspection, (I would not want it any other way for piece of mind), hope it's that simple.

Although I haven't tested it myself, the misses thinks its fine since I got 4 new tyres.

The two front one's should have be replaced before now really and the I hadn't realised the backs were also very low on tread.

All looks good but I'll confirm once I've driven it over the weekend

Power steering fluid level was ok, added system cleaner/conditioner. No improvement YET, as I only did about 15 miles today without much improvement if any I was wondering it it may take a while to kick in. I'm taking it to a bongo approved local garage for wax-oil treatment so I may get them to have a look at steering bushes, ball joints etc.
