Bulb types ??

Some time back there was a query regarding stop / tail lights / indicators / reversing light bulbs ..

On reading it seems some Bongos have the (expensive) large all glass wedge / cap less Japanese (motor bike) style bulbs .. as also fitted to my Toyota Estima ..

When I removed the rear clusters on my 1998 V6 Bongo .. all mine where 'normal' ..the type available from any car shop / Poundland / Halfords etc: ... all have the metal / bayonet type base with various off set pins ..

So .. I wast just wondering what base the front white side lights are ..

I assume they are the all glass / wedge style (T10) style .... but on thinking ... are they a metal based bayonet fitting type ..??

Is there a more modern, e.g. LED, lamp that can be fitted in the front side light fittings to give a little bit more light output without exceeding the legal wattage (assuming there is a legal limit)?

Not sure there is a legal limit but you'll have trouble exceeding it with LEDs because they are much mower wattage than bulbs. These are very good: -

and they do come in white too.

I've tried many of the cheaper ones on Ebay, 10 for 99p etc but they are not very bright and they don't last very long, some only a matter of hours. I've had a blue set of the above in for over a year now and they are still working :)

I use these LED bulbs in my Toyota 'side' lights .. they each have 68 surface mounted diodes (SMD) on each bulb .. on the Toyota the LED being inside the headlight .. the reflector gives a very bright light for five watts ..

The Toyota uses the same style normal filament (but bigger) cap less bulbs for the all the external stop / tail / indicators ..

yeah they are the glass 501's or T10...same thing.... got a box of Bosch ones in my glovebox
With LED they look good but MOT testers don't like 'em.... old bill on a bad day hate them too

On my Toyota the 'white' LED side lights have an hint of blue... but certainly no 'bluer' than the legally required OEM daylight running lights fitted to modern cars .. even the likes Audis .. Mercs .. Jags .. etc:

I have tried a few LED with limited success ..

I had no luck at all with the high power Cree variety ..

The small cree wedge 501 side lights got seriously hot .. then went into a flashing mode ..

So I fitted normal 64 SMD bulbs in the front side lights .. these are fine ..

The Cree / SMD stop / tail bulbs .. although the same off set pins as the Bongo .. the bottom lecky contacts would not line up with those in the bulb holder .. so I had to re fit the old twin filament stop tail ..
