Have you checked the oil level in the box?
Dipstick under the driver's seat.

Checking the oil level .. I have 2 marks on dip stick
One 20 and the other 65. the level is about 25mm above the 65....
This is with the engine not running.... is this correct?

No ...

With the engine running and the handbrake hard on ... . go up and down from 'L' to 'P' several times .. then leave the gear lever in 'P' and check the fluid with the engine running ..

You may have to do it several times to get a good reading .. the level should be at the top of the notch ..

Ok have done the up and down on the gear stick.
The 3 marks on the dipstick are 20ºC and 2 at 65ºC The oil level is resting at approx 20mm above the 65 mark and no drive.... the engine does drop 100 rpm when in gear but no drive

Did you feel around the wheels to see if they where very hot ..??

Maybe a long shot but could be a sticking calliper, and you are driving with the brake(s) locked on ..

Many might think that a strange thought, but, I actually pushed the beast about 10feet :!: to make sure that wasn't the case!
Thanks for the thought though

Fluid level and the drop in revs sounds OK .. Hope it's something simple ..

A few years back I changed the 'iffy' auto gearbox on my Ford Granada with a known to be good one .. to find the new box acted exactly the same as the old one ...!!

Turned out to be the end of a small bore rubber pipes had perished where it joined a solenoid valve ... destroying the vacuum to efficiently work the valve ..!!

See if you can disconnect the electrical connectors on the gearbox. Give them a good clean and a dose of WD40 and try again.
We had a flashing Hold light a while back and after cleaning up the connections it's all OK again.

Someone else has mentioned the solenoid gizmos and could be blocked....
May have to look deeper. Thanks

That's one I hadn't thought of..... and I forgot to mention on some of the occasions when the gears failed the hold light did come on flashing...... umm electrical connections on the gearbox.... ok something else to look at. Thanks again

Hi,with automatics you need to check that the brakes are not binding (overheating) does the vehicle freewheel OK.

Is it 4WD or 2WD.
