Bongo Fury

Just bought a 2003 campervan bongo, and have now found the inevitable teething problems you get when you buy second-hand from a private seller!
Firstly, the speedo is going nuts: the needle wags back-and-forwards all over the dial except when you're doing 60 mph (it's a British speedo: in mph). The seller assured me this was just due to lack of use and should free-up, but it hasn't.
Secondly, there seems to be a problem with the zig pms3 unit: It's got a new leisure battery, but it didn't fully charge after a 40 minute drive. It's still remaining on half-charge ('norm' on the zig's LED readout) which is where it was originally after it was charged previously via the 240 volt hookup. Also, when I switch the zig unit from 'van' (leisure battery) to 'car' (the main van battery) it's not seeing the main van battery: no readout on the LED display and no power to the lights etc. Blown fuses or zig fault? (the fridge works okay).

Sounds like you need to check that the starter battery is actually connected to the Zig unit if it's not showing on the Zig LED.
For the leisure battery to charge from the engine the Zig unit should be connected to the starter battery.

First which unit do you have Zig is one make and the PMS3 is another make, the Zig units will also have a number like Marque 1 or CF8/9 etc.
It sounds like you need to check that there is a working Split Charge Relay and that the TWO fuses close to each battery are intact, the cables will have a connection to each battery with the fuse close t the battery and the other ends connect to the relay. If one of the fuses has blown then replace BOTH as the other will have been strained and is likely to pop at the most inconsiderate time!

Oops, it's not a zig, it's a PMS3. Will check those fuses, thanks!

Dodgy speedo reading may be caused by the speed sensor in the gearbox. There are different types depending on petrol/diesel/auto/manual/2WD/4WD. Can be quite expensive to get a new one, so perhaps treat as last resort option.

The speedo whilst reading in MPH will have originally been in KPH and therefore will have had some conversion carried out.
It is possible that if the speedo has been chipped, this is where the signal coming into the speedo is altered by introducing a small microchip into the wiring behind the speedo that the connections could be poor/intermitant causing the fluctuations.

With respect to your onboard power supply not doing what you expect, unless you are very electrical savey I would have it looked at by a good auto electricain or friend with the required skills as it sounds to me that it isn't wired in as I would expect.
It is easy to get the wiring diagrames for these units via internet search to help you check out the wiring, however you do need some basic tools such as volt meters etc.

Just bought a second-hand Bongo. 1st trip out (40 miles) no problem except that the speedo went nuts: needle wobbling all over the place.
Took it out today in heavy rain, got 3 miles down the road and the hold light started flashing and the auto gearbox went into safe mode (stuck in 3rd) so drove home slowly.
3/4 hour later, took it round the block to see if still a problem and no hold light/safe mode problem (but speedo still nuts).

Forums suggest gearbox sensor issue; can anyone suggest a good auto gearbox specialist in central Scotland?
