Is the transmission oil and engine the same and how do I check the transmission oil... Through the same dip stick?

NO ... The auto gear box uses Dexon 3 fluid .. NOT .. engine oil ..
The gear box fluid dip stick is under the drivers seat and slopes to the back of the engine ..
Better to check the fluid warm after a run ..
The fluid level is checked .... with the engine running ..
Hand brake ..HARD .. on move the gear lever from 'P' to 'L' .. several times ... then leave the lever in 'P' ..
Remove the dipstick and check the level .. you may have to do it several times to get a accurate level indication ..
Ideally the fluid should look a transparent red .. if it is brown(ish) or smells burnt then it's time for a fluid change ..
The Dexon 3 fluid is topped ..(or filled) up, down the dipstick tube ..

No they are not the same!
The engine oil on the Diesel is done from the Passenger side, both dipstick and fill, on the V6 the dipstick is passenger side but fill from Drivers side.
The AT fluid is always done from the drivers side, the dip stick slants backwards towards the transmission, its in roughly the same place on all the engines
just below the engine oil fill cap on the V6;

Its filled via the dipstick ..... Dextron 3.
You need to check it when the oil is WARM.
