Freda Philharmonic

Hi, this is my first but hopefully not my last post! I've re-joined and am finally able to log-in. I've dipped into the forum many times during my 18 months of (until now) trouble-fre-da motoring, and it has been invaluable in enabling me to identify the multitude of different noises my Freda now makes; a repertoire which rivals many city ochestras.

I have a screeching (exhaust manifold stud sheared), a ticking (CV joint, I think), a graunching on pulling away to the left (rear diff?), a blowing (split in rear exhaust box)..........I can deal with all those as and when finances allow.......BUT.....I now have gurgling and hissing which won't wait for finances to improve!

OK, I admit I've lured you into another over-heating post! Don't go now though since you've come so far.

I own a 1995 Freda 2.5 turbodiesel 4WD Auto. I've recently suffered a gurgling overheating episode and decided to replace the coolant. I downloaded the workshop manual extract and followed the instructions to the letter.

Oddly, when I got to the refilling stage I could only get about 8 litres of 50/50 water antifreexe mix in. I assumed that when bleeding air out of the system I would be able to get the rest in. Well I went through the idling and revving processes as described and everything seemed fine; burps coming from bleed pipe, temp guage normal, heater hot, only occasional cooling fan cut in, but after completing all stages the water level was still full, not allowing me to get any more in.

Since everything else seemed fine, I went for a check drive of about 10 miles....ran lovely, performance fine, temp fine.....so I decided to reward myself with a pie and chips.....got to the chippy and guess what........gurgle gurgle bloody gurgle.

OK, chippy only 200yds from home so crawled home and ate pie and chips.

Had another go at it today, drained right down and bled/filled up as before, everything went ok........again could only get 8ish litres in....then at the last stage after plugging bleed pipe and fitting reservoir cap, 5 mins at 2500 rpm, then 3 min idle, everything still ok until after the 5th 5 sec burst of 2500 rpm, I then left it to idle but gurgling and pouring from overflow pipe started, accompanied this time by a hissing noise from somewhere near the rad.

So to my questions:

1. Why can I only get 8 litres of coolant into the system? (is it because of air already in system? If so, shouldn't the coolant displace it when bleed pipe is open?)

2. Hissing noise.......would this be air being sucked into the system through a dodgy connection causing water to be displaced through overflow pipe?

3. Is there any simple way to diagnose possible major problems e.g. cracked head, head gasket, inept mechanic?

4. What next? Any ideas on next stage would be much appreciated.....system has been thoroughly flushed, de-sludged as much as possible, and coolant flowing out is very clean.

Thanks for reading this....you'll be pleased to know I've made a mental note to make any further posts short and succinct.

Cheers............Rob

This maybe a stupid question sorry if it sounds it! did you actually drain ALL the coolant out?? or is there still some in the system?? ie did you measure what came out? if only 8 came out and it was full you'll only get 8 back in if you know what I mean.

I did not actually fill mine but the mechanic who did it blamed the rear radiators which seem to cause a major airlock.

Thanks for the replies; although I didn't check drained quantity, I really don't think it was the full compliment, and I've since spoken to Andy at AVA (very helpful guy), who concurrs with you that it's probably coolant left in the heater circuit.......I've just finished yet another fill/bleed session .....neighbours must be getting p'd off with 6 mins at 2500rpm! IT seemed to go ok this time and feels right............time for a gentle road test I think........wish me luck!

Cheers.....Rob
