2.0L 2wd petrol query

On my way to work this morning, the charge light was on all the way. It has come on a couple of times now.
When driving the gearchange(auto) also started playing up and wouldnt change gears.
Checked the ATF fluid all ok there.
Checked the battery-reading 10.8V no charging from alternator though, explains the charge light I think?
Come to start it after work, flat as pancake. Booster pack started, but driving home no headlights, or anything switched on, the car again was very sluggish, poor gearchange.
Would the gearbox be affected by the flat battery and no charging from the alternator?
Wheres the best place to get an alternator and how much roughly?

Both the engine and gearbox have ECUs so low voltage is likely to cause some form of erratic running. Then you've got the additional load of the ignition system to take into account. A few years back during the Poland trip, one of the diesel Bongos in the convey had an alternator fail but was still able to get to the final destination by driving at some pace non-stop until they arrived at the campsite with a practically flat battery. Unfortunately, with petrol engines you can't keep running so long as you have the additional power consumed by the injectors, ignition and fuel pump.
Worth trying a couple of the breakers as there are a few more 2 litre ones knocking around now. Alternatively, if you can live without the use of the van for a few days, there are plenty of places who can recondition it for you.

Contact Wheelquick in Wigan the 2.0 petrol is their fave model Im sure they would advise you on this!

Hi,might be a stupid question,is the alternator drive belt and connector Ok.

Yes belt is in good condition and no output from alternator.
Got it took off today, and I think it has collapsed inside as when you shake it it is rattly and a couple of ball bearings fell out. Not good I would think.
Trying to source a replacement locally but one motor factor said he'd matched it up and supplied me one today, but guess what it's the wrong one. So lots of calls to make in the morning.

Hi stuc,you could try here,giving them the details of the ALT,I believe it is the same as the V6.

Hi managed to source an alternator today with the help of Mike senior at wheelquick, wigan. He put me onto Japanese automotive spares who were really easy to talk to and can send an alternator to arrive tomorrow. Will let you know how I get on.

Alternator arrived this morning, half hour at lunchtime to fit it, everything seems to be ok again.

Ah yes, i remember this well.... Not only was an alternator relayed to a Polish camp site within 24 hours & then fitted in 20 minutes..?
British ingenuity was used to flout Polish daytime running light laws...
