Bongo Fury

Hi guys,

My '98 2.5 diesel is kicking out black smoke even when the engine is warmed up. It only does it when putting my foot down and a little bit on gear change. I know this is to be expected from an old diesel, but I think it's putting out more smoke than it should be.

I've read that the EGR valve is a likely candidate and may need changing - is this an expensive job?

A mechanic has recommended trying a Forte fuel additive before doing anything else. I've heard that forte is pretty good stuff, does anyone have any experience with it? If so, which Forte product did you use?

Hi,it would probably be worthwhile having a look at the turbo oilseals and the inlet manifold may need de gunked.

Are you using supermarket fuel ? Is there a loss of power ?

half way along the rocker cover on the passy side there is the crankcase and rocker breather pipe, if its the older model, pull it off and see if its breathing heavy when warmed up. if the valve stem seals are worn or the rings you will see the telltale oil vapour but this wouldnt be black.

i vented mine to atmosphere to help the engine burn more clean/cool air.

must admit it sounds like air filter or normal over fuelling of the pump though.

egr is best fixed by blanking it off altogether,

its a bit hard to say really.
mrs has an very good auto(2wd) and mines a diesel manual box (4wd).
i opened my crankcase at the same time as i removed the egr completely.

it fly.s .

it cannot hurt can it, and its just had an mot, i showed him and he wasnt interested as long as its not dripping oil.

i removed the pipe where it dips towards the rear air pipe, then extend it down wards with same sized pipe and tagged it to a bolt on the bellhousing just to the rear of the under tray. the airpipe was blocked with a short piece of pipe and a plumbing fitting so it doesnt suck in air.
