Bongo Fury

Just had the bongo in the garage as something was leaking, turned out it was fuel pump so that was sent off and all seals and a solenoid were replaced, a split negative battery terminal was also replaced and oil change.

Now ever since when i cold start it in the morning it's very rough, missfiring and revving at 1k , it feels/sounds just like when you have to much veg oil in the mix in the winter.

Sometimes it starts and the revs are all over the place 950ish then up to 1k without anyone touching the accelerator pedal?

Any ideas? After replacing the radiator,water pump, cambelt last year then £750 on the fuel pump and service this time the £ are starting to add up.

All i know is the cold start solenoids should nip up the revs (like a choke?) & keep 'em there at around 750rpm till the engine is up to temperature, then slack off so the engine idles at the same rpm... Anything higher than 900? the vehicle thinks it being driven & could come across as a little "lumpy"..??

I may well be wrong...

Interesting as i think they had to replace one of the solenoids when they did the fuel pump, bongos back to garage weds.

sounds like what jaylee says, the throttle cable is too tight---adjusted up. the glow plugs warm up only if the revs are below about 950, if the cable is set wrong they may be coming on, then as it warms up and speeds up the engine revs, it switches them off, then it dies a tad, then back on etc, until coolant temps reach about 50 deg c then they are off.

whats it like when you jump in from cold and just set off straight away.??


or maybe the throttle position sensor is adjusted wrong, its on the top of the fuel pump on the early model, what year is yours.

If you start it and just drive off it's fine.

We had to wait a week for the fuel pump to be sorted as it wasn't just perished seals they had to replace a solenoid ,would that be a potential problem?

Bongos booked back into same garage this week , but would like to give them some ideas.

was it the electric stop solenoid that was replaced, this just shuts off the fuel supply to stop the engine.
or one of the two cold start solenoids that are mounted above the pump, these are the ones that are level with the rocker cover at the drivers side. they act like a choke acting on the diaphram that pulls the throttle up when cold.

Cold start idle screw needs adjusting, 10 min job with a 10mm spanner and a flat blade screw driver, do a search on Barack Obama and all will become clear, if you pm me I'll forward you my number and talk you through it .

Thanks for all the advice, bongo goes into garage tomorrow.

Is the cold start idle screw under the driver or passenger seat? will be taking a lost of suggestions to the garage for them to look at as they charge £50 hour.

Well bongos back, garage adjusted the cold idle a smidge and it now idles below 950, they checked the solenoids were operating which they were and bongo seems to be fine now.

Glad of that as in the last 2 years it's had new waterpump, radiator , fuel pump new reat wheel arches and respray!
