JBL GTO628 Front door speaker potential issue.

Last year i fitted JBL GTO 628 speakers to my front doors whilst retaining the origional factory speaker grills, now i always new that they were a snug fit and took a fair bit of jiggery pokery to get them into the space provided, recently however i have noticed that the sound quality from them has been below par so today i removed the doorcards to investigate the loss of quality, what i've found is that because it's such a tight fit the rubber mounts for the cones has been pinched and split allowing the cone to vibrate without the rubber mount to absorb the shock.

The speakers are now beyond repair and have been replaced today with some Edge 205 4way items, i have removed the origional factory grills made some infill trims from 3mm mdf covered in black sticky back vynal with the new speakers fitted into the new trims and into the factory holes, the trim panels are held inplace by double sided 1mm numberplate sticky pads and the speaker locating screws which go through the new trims and into the door trim plastic, once the speaker covers are inplace no screws can be seen, it was dark by the time i'd finished so i'll post up some pics of the end results tomorow.

Also meant to add that if you have fitted the GTO 268's you may want to move them into the door trims before they get damaged beyond repair like mine have

I posted about this exact problem. After many people said they were a good fit I discovered the opposite. The solution is easy. The plastic protectors they come with... leave them on, and just dont' do the door card screws up 100%,. Works a treat. Cones and rubber can move without touching the door card.

I'm pleased with it, the problem is when you pull the grills off it leaves 3 unsightly holes, so with the door panels off i drew around the grills onto 3mm mdf cut them out with the jigsaw then held them in place and drew the speaker cut out from the inside drilled a hole to get me jigsaw in and cut it out, then a little sanding to smooth off all the edges and prep the face for vynaling, i then coloured the edge in with a black perminent marker before laying and cutting the vynal, i then used 1mm numberplate sticky pads to hold them inplace while i marked and drilled the holes for the self tappers, hey presto :)

Also by using 3mm mdf it stops the new speaker grills from fouling the door card recess 8)

This is exactly why I fitted these

They are very slim so dont foul, cant remember but I think its the smaller of the two, sound excellent and good value as these were near £100 when they first came out, a few shops have old stock thats how I got mine
