Fuel Guage again

I had a trip to Hursley Hants on Wednesday and I set off thinking I had about half a tank but when I checked the guage it was below 1/4. So I stopped and filled up but it only took 30 litres. On the way back after about 140 miles I guess, the guage was reading 1/2 one minute and 1/4 the next. This happened a few times and I put it down to hills and the fuel sloshing about.
This morning I checked the car before going shopping and the guage was well under a quarter. I put 5l of veg oil in and I am pretty sure the guage did not move. After I had done the shopping and got in the car the guage was almost on half! My guage by chance is powered off the leisure battery so never goes off, maybe that is bad for it?
Is this the same problem others have had or does it normally just fail totally?

Assuming the earths are ok you may possibly have a faulty sender?
Some times you need to replace the earth from the sender unit that fits inside the tank, heres a picture of one I modded as it was all over the place and no works fine, all down to a bad earth on the sender not the van

The wire runs from the plastic sender earth connection to the top of the sender, then a nut and bolt is passed through the lid and sealed with an EPDM rubber seal, just connect the vehicle earth to this and it will work fine.
If you are not ok with DIY I do have a spare working sender too

The gauge wont be powered off the leisure battery otherwise all the lights on the instrument panel would be on all the time rather then when the ignition is switched off. Faulty earth is the most likely cause of the problem. Unlike all the other gauges & dials, there is no return spring to bring it back down to zero when the voltage is removed so the needle will stay at the point when it last had power. The mod shown above is very comprehensive, but all you actually need to do is run a new earth connection to the tank rather than the sender. There are a couple of holes around the flange where the two halves of the tank join together & you can just run a lead to a conveniently located threaded hole on the chassis leg. This can be done quite easily from under the van without the need to remove any interior trim or conversion.

Thanks chaps great info and advice. I will try the tank earth quick fix first as it is easy and if the problem persists I will have a go at the sender earth, the pics are really useful. Interesting about the gauge staying up, only noticed it since I have had the LB but possibly never looked.
