Replacing Auto selector/shift

I wanted to replace the selector with the correct one (black in situ - gray to fit and match rest of trim). It has turned into one of those job you wish you hadn't started. Where the selector cable goes through the plastic housing it is secured with with a push on horse shoe shaped clip that has two spring loaded probes.. I don't want to break anything but efforts to release the cable by sliding out the metal horse shoe/clip have been fruitless. I could use more force to try and slide it back but this would mean losing control of the clip and I am concerned that the cable may drop down and cause more problems.
Has anyone done this job - is there a trick to get the clip off (and back on) - am I likely to lose the cable when forcing the horse shoe clip off? There is probably a name for this clip but I don;t know what it is.
