Headlights

hi, hope someone can help on this. Tonight i had to leg it home with fogs and sides on because my headlights failed.. had the main beam symbol on the dash as well..
When i got home i had a fiddle at the fuses, not sure which are for the lights but made sure nothing burnt out, then checked the connections at the back of the bulbs themselves. This seemed to do the trick but went off again/

Does it sound like bulbs, connections or something more sinister...could the mainbeam symbol mean something?

Cheers

the connectors at the back of the bulb have a habit of shorting out.look for the green corrosion, check them carefully. or it could just be one bulb shorting internally.

Had a look at the connectors in the dark and they seemed ok, from what i could see.

Will have a good look at them when i get to the office tomorrow

take each connector off and test then, that would show which side if any is affected.
does sound like a duff bulb.

Its not unknown for both head lights to fail together, with a heavy load on the alternator the voltage will stay a bit higher and the sudden reduced load of the first light blowing can cause the second to go at the same time - oh OK 20milleseconds later ;-)

Or for the actual wires / connections to corrode / burn out ..

Cheers all, was looking towards the bulbs being the prob but this morning had the main beam light with no lights on the sadh again, popped the bonnet and wriggled the conns, hey presto lights on. Now they seem ok, as in working when they should with now main beam indicator but the driver side is dim.

Maybe both connectors and bulbs?

bulbs either work or are blown so think its bad connection or wiring

There are also relays inside the n/s front wing. You should one click from with side lights, another for dipped & another for main.

These lights can be a bit odd.. I got pulled by the law for a dodgy drivers side head light on the way back from a gig in Swindon just before Christmas. I knew the lights were working when i left home..
I tend to park facing the garage door.
The following morning just before work i went to change the bulb & as i went to pull the connector off it worked!! I checked the connector with a meter & looking it over i saw no fault.... Put the bulb back & jiggled it, all was fine!

That night after work i had another gig.. Setting off i noticed the headlight was off again... I changed the bulb for another one cussing as i did so because i was already running late & the new bulb has been fine since... [-o<

Sometimes a wee bit extra solder on the bulb does the trick.

Had the same thing on mine, both bulbs went at same time. while changing em i found the pin on one bulb had corroded and was intermittantly working. this must have brought the other down. nightmare trying to get the connector off but persistance paid off.

It was the connectors.

ONe wire had worked loose on top of melty black stuff around the spade connector the wire was frayed on, so that would haev been causing the short or whatever.

Anyway, started off fixing it myself only for the connectors to shatter in my cold hands.. then the wiring looked realllly dodgy and i got 'The Fear' (tm) .. plus i couldnt get my hands into the tiny spaces to fix so got the lights sorted out at a Garage in St Annes.

Lights now better than ever !
