Hello. This is my first post. We love our Bongo, have had it since June as an import, V Reg Diesel 4x4 but a few glitches are starting to make us lose faith. Please help us restore it!
We have a coolant alarm fitted, did a solid 2 hour drive a week ago but as we got near home (thankfully!) there was a hot smell (kids said it was a bit like curry!?) and as we pulled onto drive lots of steam rising from bonnet. Alarm hadn't gone off and still coolant just above screw in tank. left it to cool off, next morning no coolant and alarm went off when started. Phoned our local garage who have always been great and is literally 2 mins away and after topping up coolant we drove it to them. (they've dealt with several Bongos but I suspect it isn't their field of expertise normally) Anyway, they rang 2 days later to reassure us it required a new radiator which was leaking (not the new cylinder head we feared!!!) and duly acquired one for us and fitted it. picked Bongo up today, got a few miles up the road and steam again coming from bonnet and coolant dropping. Turned round and went back to garage. They scratched their heads a bit, topped it up, thought perhaps it was airlock and also put old radiator cap back on in case that helped pressure in system. husband then drove it the 10 miles to work, seemed ok.Went out to car park later in afternoon, coolant has gone again. he has more to top it up to get home luckily!!! Back to the garage tomorrow morn now fearing that maybe we've unecessarily forked out for radiator and something else is wrong!?? Was thinking of printing off fact sheets on coolant and radiator etc from website and give those to the mechanic to see if this helps them get to bottom of it! As I say, they're a v well thought of garage who are v reliable normally.
Any thoughts anyone!? Anybody had a similar prob! have the garage done something wrong when changing radiator!? Please help! Thanks!!!!!

look on youtube at the three video,s on how to bleed a mazda bongo by bewitched blingo, then ask them to watch them.

you could also ask them to pressure test the entire cooling system for leaks.

Can you describe where the steam was coming from? May give some clues on where the leak is.

Thanks for speedy replies. My other half is very impressed. As you lift bonnet steam was coming from top right hand corner of radiator but view obscured by plastic air intake.( We are based near Bridgend, South Wales by the way in case that's of use or interest!)
He has managed to get home without alarm sounding. will see what's left in there in morning!

please dont drive it until someone WITH bongo cooling system knowledge has had a look, there are a few good ones round your area. topping up the expansion tank is not enough to sort it out im afraid, thats why i suggested you look at the three vids, this will show that the cylinder head needs to be bled of all the air that may be trapped there.

Coolant still there this morn, garage going to read thro coolant system and overheating fact sheet and perhaps watch video. We would have gone to Target Mini in Waunarlwydd who are recommended Bongo garage and we always use for our Bongo needs but obviously getting a Bongo with leaking coolant all the way from here to Swansea was a problem. Going to have a chat with them on phone later and see if they can shed any light or make suggestions.
Thank you for your help. Really appreciate it.
