Bongo Fury

I awaiting on my bongo arriving and am unsure as to converting myself or having it converted.
I hear there are issues with DVLA with self conversions, does anyone know what is the truth?
What is needed to get conversion passed by DVLA for transfer from MPV to campervan?

There is a set DVLA criteria for conversions, then registering as a Motor home ..

I bought mine self converted, and yes their are criteria.
Such as having a sink, beds, cooking facilities. Mine has basically
a wooden kitchen unit with sink, anchored to the floor or sides. The previous owner had to send in photos to the DVLA of the unit in place. It is registered as a motor caravan or whatever the exact wording is. All of it was removable, and i've never used it. I just made sure I told my insurance company what I had, very specifically. Some insurance companies wouldn't insure it because of this, and the fact that I needed business insurance too.

It's generally easier / cheaper to insure a 'Motor Caravan' than an MPV, particularly when it's also an import ..!!

This link http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/M ... Advice.pdf gives details of what is required to reclassify as a motor caravan (including several Bongo examples). Many old conversions, especially rear kitchens, wouldn't qualify under the new rules, but the new rules are not retrospective.

I reclassified mine about 3 months ago. I followed a link which was in the members part on the main site, which included a covering letter which just had to be giggled. I have a rear kitchen with table and seats over rear arches from north star conversions. I had to take photos of the sink, water storage tank the van itself etc. sent it off and had new logbook back within 4 weeks classifying van as motor caravan

I suspect that the conversion companies are just trying to line their pockets. DVLA don't care who does the work as long as the relevant conditions are met.

I too, suspect that conversion companies are trying to talk you out of attempting it yourself. Some of them talk utter rubbish.
There is no reason your own conversion if done well and with the correct bits, cannot be registered as a motorcaravan.

Mine was completely homemade. Still got through
As a motor caravan. The water storage was just two big water
Containers, the cooker is a small one from go outdoors,
And the sink is tiny.
