Stalling in Reverse

Have recently purchased a new shape bongo 2.5 V6. It's a V reg with low mileage and drives well. However, when reversing up my drive it keeps stalling. I am reversing at low revs as it is a tight turn at the top of the drive. Doesn't stall at all in forward gears. Any ideas. It has been sitting idle for the best part of a year so does it just need a full service?

Auto or manual? The V6 lacks the low down torque of the diesel, but I've never had any problems getting mine up hills in either direction. Does it restart ok after it's stalled? Perhaps the fuel in the tank is low so it's sloshing away from the pick up pipe?"

It is an auto. It doesn't generally have a problem going uphill and starts no problem straight after a stall. Tank is almost half full so don't think it is a fuel problem. It seems to go too fast when I depress the accelerator or stalls when trying to reverse gently up or down the drive. Have to have one foot on brake and other on accelerator to control the speed. Hope his further info helps with suggested diagnosis and thanks for suggestions so far.

Would this symptom occur after a cold start & while the engine is not fully up to temperature perchance...?

Yes it is generally on cold start but was also doing it after 15 mins but on a cold day.

Take your foot off the brake.

you should only need the accelerator to control the speed on an automatic unless the tick over is set too high,or the accelerator is sticking.

Yes I realise that, I was using the brake as I couldn't control the speed with the accelerator only.
Could the throttle behave differently in reverse than in forward gears e.g. sticky?

The direction of travel wouldn't make any difference. Another thought: do you have the air conditioning running when you're having this problem? It adds quite a load on the engine and if you're not able to give it any welly going backwards, perhaps the revs are dropping to low?

Is there no possibility that gearbox drag could differ between D and R ?
