Bongo Fury

Hi All,

I'm a new bongo owner and a bit of a mechanical novice so bare with me. I discovered that my water pump was leaking. I have brought a new water pump and using the instructions from the factsheets thought I'd have a go myself. I have loosen off the alternator and drained the rad but I have had no luck undoing the 4 bolts in the water pulley they are not budging at all. Is there a certain order in which you have to loosen them or have they just seized up. If so has anyone else had this problem? and can anyone suggested what I can do next as I have tried with all my force to get them off.

the centre is part of the pump shaft so dont damage the shape or you wont get the pulley off over it.

get a long spanner 12mm if i remember right, place on one nut, use another long spanner on another and undo that, or use a long flat bar jammed between the centre and another nut head to stop the rotation of the pump while using a spanner on a different nut.
i tightened the belts up first to aid grip on the pulley to help stop it spinning.

If you have an old belt you make a sort of tourniquet to hold the pulley.

Alternatively, most hardware stores sell a belt grip tool......I have one that I use on pulleys...

At a push you can use an oil filter strap tool also.

You can put a flat bar across two bolt to stop the hub turning when you slacken another do this to them all don't remove any until you've done them all.also just slacken dont undo more than a few turns

If you need a spare pulley, I've got one available.

I know this sounds harsh but if you don't know to do a basic engineering job , you should leave the spanners alone before you bend the pump shaft , skin your knuckles or worst. DIY is for the home not a Bongo, ( who rattled the wasps nest )

Simon are you going to assimilate all the Bongos' on here. I speak as one who has benefited from your spare engine.

Therefore it follows that my Bongo will become part of "The Jones Collective" . One assumes that resistance is futile.

Hi,you might have a point,but I think his name is Jack not Samson,if he can bend the shaft I will give him a coconut.The
pump is knackered anyway,just need the pulley off it.

If it were me, I'd loosen the bolts while the belt is fully tensioned as it will provide significant resistance against a spanner given a swift tap with a rubber mallet. The reason I mentioned the spare pulley was that if the original got slightly mangled in the process, it may be useful to have a replacement on standby.

Plus, my spare engine does indeed want to spread its love far and wide (and I need the space in my garage )

Thanks for the good advice everyone and sorry for the delay I've been away. I managed to get the pulley off using a breaker bar in the end and the new pump is on and working well I used Haydn Callow's see-saw method for bleeding the bongo which took a bit of time but worked very well and I did it all without skinning my knuckles and bending the pump shaft how about that.
