Help!!!!
Our Bongo 1995 4wd AFT has just failed her MOT.
The garage said the ABS warning light isn't coming on? Husband thought it didn't have ABS but apparently it does? We have had 2 Fredas prior to this one and never had a problem or noticed whether the ABS warning light is on/off or even THERE...

We live in a small village, we found a garage a few miles away that has had a few bongos in so we just had her fuel leak fixed, but she failed on this!

Is there anyone on here who knows what to do? MOT expires in a few days so she will have to be grounded soon!!! And the MOT garage don't know what to do... Husband has gone to the pub in a sulk :(

Help!!!!!!

Are you sure you have abs. Mines a 96 and I don't have it. Hopefully the garage know what they are looking at. Next on my list is check the bulb, this means taking the clocks out and checking the bulb is ok. After that it gets more complicated. Hopefully somebody who knows more will be along shortly

Have you popped your vin number into the second row of the Russian Bongo Clubs Bongo finder to check the specification of your Bongo?

It's a bit tricky to prove to the garage as all the dashboards have a symbol for ABS regardless of whether or not it is fitted. If you can get under the van, have a look at the front driveshafts just outside of the CV joints and you will see a serrated metal ring which is the ABS ring / rotor which I expect all Bongos will be fitted with. If you have ABS there will be a sensor with a wire coming out the back of each hub. There will also be an ABS actuator under the bonnet with pipes that go to each wheel.

Here's the whole gubbins which you would expect to see if you have ABS:

I wouldn't have thought a '95 would have ABS fitted, the Russian site is a good start, and as Simon points out, the 'Ring' should be visible if you remove a wheel.

Good luck. [-o<

I reckon all driveshafts will probably have the ring fitted as it's cheaper to make them all the same, but the big lump under the bonnet will not be fitted unless you have ABS.

Thanks so much guys! I will pass on this info to my dear hubby.
I expect he is crying into his pint right now... Both his previous Fredas died, one in the snow and another due to a wrong part that ruined the engine. Poor love.

The usual fault with ABS is a light that comes on and won't go out. No sign of a light usually means no ABS. Its very rare to have ABS on a 95 though possible and if it is fitted, it usually comes in a package with drivers air bag and a few other electrical fancies.

If you have a Freda with a lower spec the odds are you are without ABS.

No ABS on my 96 4wd.... no abs ring on the driveshafts either.
On a '96 2wd I have in for work, no abs either....

When the MOT tester inputs the vehicle details into VOSA computer it always gives any specific test methods/items i.e.... abs light is on for 10 seconds and things like that plus how they need to perform certain parts of the test on certain cars....

My Bongo has NO special items on the test sheet....

Take it to another MOT shop....

Problem with that though is won't the new garage see the 'fail' ticket against that vehicle and start digging the same hole? :?

Hi,it is possible that someone has removed the bulb to hide a fault with the ABS.

Looks like ABS could be an optional extra on these vehicles.

SPECIFICATION
(some optional extra)
ABS (Antilock brake system)

There is a connection between the ABS light and the rear brake lights.

When I fitted LED stop lamps, the ABS light started to come on randomly. Now, I never worked out if the ABS was switching off due to the ABS brain detecting a failed stop lamp, or id the ABS lamp is dual-function and also indicates a failed stop lamp (but the ABS still works).

Anyhow, after a week of worrying about my random "ABS Fault", I happened to lend someone my van. As I watched it drive away, I saw how crap the LED stop lamps were. So, the next day I refitted the normal fillament ones. ABS light stopped playing up.

So here's a theory - at some point in the past your van has had LED stop lamps, and to "cure" the apparent "ABS Fault" someone has removed the ABS lamp from the dash.

Just a theory mind, and if you have not got ABS, then totally irrelevant!

An easy test for the presence of ABS would be to stick your arm in the space in front of a front wheel, and feel back and up towards the inner wing adjacent to the suspension strut. You will feel either a brake pipe on its own (no ABS) or a brake pipe and a rubber-jacketed cable (ABS). If you find the cable, you have ABS.
