and now some general comments about the seal change, I followed (dandywarhol's) fact sheet.
Tools used:
10mm ring spanner
10mm socket, ratchet & hinged unit
DIY wire tool made from a key "ring"
(Battery charger

)
Tool I wish I had:
One of those mini mirrors on a telescopic pole!
Note 1: I have bigger hands than dandywarhol
Note 2: had to access the rear blanking plate / bolts from L side (behind injector pipes) & below. The main trouble was getting the rear blanking plate & bolts off..just working with my finger tips. The DIY wire tool was used to help take out the original seal at the rear.
Note 3: picture this yoga position: balancing on the knees on the drivers foot step, arms in & around the fuel pump, butt in the air, tongue sticking out, lots of moans & groans

Under the drivers seat you'll see the fuel filter, on the top is a screw top, unscrew and pump until you can feel the pressure in the system, then tighten and turn her over

crack (undo) the injector pipes and it may help prime the system (cover the cracked pipe with a cloth or you will catch an eye full).
check that you havnt removed the supply to the lecky stop switch.

If you dont have a hand primer find someone with a pela pump its what i did. You need to make sure you have diesel at the pump, otherwise it cranks and cranks and cra... you found that already. Hopefully you will have a hand primer, I`m now looking to replace my non hand primer with a fully working one coz if you run out of fuel its easy to refil and prime.
Hope all that made sense its late and I found some wine

Majority of Bongos that I've seen are not fitted with the primer on the fuel filter assembly (or at least I've never seen one

).

as stated have to wind it over for quite a while, usually with accelerator wide open as you've pretty much emptied the whole fuel system, but usually starts within 30 secs? did you relocate the key on the pulley properly? as i've seen it done before where the pump looks like its located but it pushes the drive pulley forward and isnt seated properly and as such doesnt run! did you have to make any adjustments to the crank/pulley position to get the pump located/in?

Just encase some local folks are looking to buy fuel pump seals, I bought here:
DTM, Short Street, St Philips, Bristol, BS2 0SW
Bosch Part No. 2460 223001-000
x2 seals
Total cost: £3.38...
.........and some yoga moaning & groaning.
Now how much would that have cost at a garage!?
