Very slow uphill and less than 20 mpg - Help

Hi, We have a 2WD 2.5l Diesel. We went round France and did about 3000km but the whole time he is hopeless up hills. It goes through all the gears and then can't try anymore so we crawl up them. It's getting very frustrating as something clearly isn't right.

Plus 18 mpg is also very low I think, even for a Bongo. We weren't overloaded and not towing and only have one set of seats in the back (not conversion instead either).

I am booking a service soon which may help a little but he was regularly serviced before we got him in July so I can't see it being a dramatic difference tbh.

Any ideas oh experienced bongonauts?

Thanks
x

There is a vacuum pipe under the drivers seat that,if disconnected from its lug, affects hill climbs drastically I think

Thanks guys, things to consider.
It does seem to get very hot as well. A table resting behind the passengers seat literally melted to the floor on one trip... Wondering if coolant system is underperforming. The exhaust manifold is relatively new so shouldn't be that.

Hi
Is this only on hills, with a heavy load? If you let the Bongo cool for an hour or so, does the problem go? and does it still remain slow AFTER climbing the hill, namely on the downhill stretch, OR if not slow after the hill, does it require more than usual throttle? ...there's an answer if you tick these boxes
Cheers
Helen

Hi Helen,
It's all hills, regardless of load and makes no difference if engine is hot or cold and it's always fine on the downhill.
Thanks

Turbo suggestions have been mentioned... The vehicle will feel its weight if the turbo is "under performing"? In my case the big pipe/hose from the inter-cooler had slipped loose... An easy fix.. By coincidence happening after i had the rocker cover gasket thing replaced!

Banjo filter also. I'd get it looked at by a Bongo specialist. Whereabouts are you?
