Talk about Sod's law.

I am due to go to the Bongo Meet in Looe on Thursday.

I have been checking over my Bongo for the trip. Had it up in the air yesterday checking diff oil levels, I noticed a leak from front diff output shaft seals but nothing to worry about until my return.

However, got into work this morning and noticed quite a large pool of fuel under the vehicle. Typical, I work four on four off and this happens on the first day back with no time off until the journey to Cornwall.

AA turned up but were not that useful. Difficult to see the source of the leak from above as it appears to be on the underside of the fuel injection pump.

I will have to get the beast up in the air after my shift tonight and see where the problem lies.

Hopefully, just a seal.

So fingers crossed to get sorted before Thu. Really do not want to miss the meeting.

Ah, but which seal?

If you are lucky, the one which is easy to get at.

Get a good light and a mirror so you can look at the pump while it is running to ascertain where the drip is coming from. If it appears to be from the region of the lowest set screw on the rear end of the pump it will be an internal leak and need a major dismantling.

What you can do to minimise the mess until you have time to sort it out and also get you to the meet quite happily is make a drip catcher. I used a polythene funnel wedged under the pump with a tube leading from it into a 1 litre plastic bottle wedged lower down in the engine compartment.

Another worthwhile precaution is to place an old towel in the engine tray to soak up any diesel that lodges there, otherwise when you park facing upwards it will all run out of the back of the tray.
when I first read this hint I worried that the towel would get blown away but it doesn't.

My leak is internal but I have virtually stopped it by cleaning up the pump with meths and applying wet suit glue (which is the stickiest stuff known to man) to the back end of the pump over the heads of the set screws.

Hope these suggestions help enough to keep you on the road without endangering motorcyclists.

Assuming it's a diesel, of course, otherwise you are dicing with death!

Many problems with the fuel pump are caused by perished O rings, between the front cover and the back plate. It's a 2 hour job to change them, according to the factsheet in the members area of the main website.

The O rings are Bosch parts ref 2-460-223-001–000. If you can't track them down locally, we have some here in the Bongo Shop.

Diplomat,is it the "distributor head" seal/o ring that is leaking on your pump.?

Sorry ...forgot to mention....yes it is a Diesel....

Really wanted to get to the Looe Meeting .......

If all else fails then it will be a Fiesta and a tent.....

Shame as I wanted to show off my butchered BMW X5 bike rack fitted to the Bongo......only cost 11.50 on Ebay.....510 squids retail..

Well pleased with that...

Have managed to drive home....there are multiple leaks from the diesel pump.

It is difficult to ascertain from where the leaks are originating as there are at least three that I can see.

I think the FIP will probably need to me removed on repaired.]

Damn no time to do this.

Oh and to top it all the bloody cat has gone AWOL.

Yes, I believe so. Not the ones on either side.

Oddly enough it hasn't got any worse with time, so I haven't dealt with it other than as described.

remove it and fit a new cam belt at the same time..cant be a bad thing

Cambelt only changed 2000 miles ago when I replaced the cylinder head.

Well pump is off and I am waiting for the postman to bring me my seal pack.

Change the cambelt regardless as it can be weakened by having the tension released and re-tensioned. Not worth the risk IMHO.

I was going to change the cambelt anyway..........
