MOT fail advice...

Hello,
had Bongo MOT'd today - it failed because it is missing the split pin locking devices from front and back track rod ends.
Bongo very recently had a standard service done (at a different garage) which included removing wheels - should they have spotted the missing split pins?

Not sure if I should be speaking to the servicing garage (a Bongo specialist) or not about this one... any thoughts from more experienced Bongo owners appreciated!

Hi ,
Track rod ends are only at the front, or so i thought ? when I replaced mine the came with a nyloc nut instead of a nut and split pin. If this is the only failure I`m suprised the mot station didnt put a couple on they are pence and take seconds to insert and split. Hope that helps a little,
Clive

Arn't those the track rod ends at the bottom right numbered 32-280s in which case they do have split pins but as advised they are pennies to get

easy job.
Just get your self a pack assorted sized split pins. Cutting Pliers (to shorten split pins) Fit (turn wheels at hard lock & you should see where they go!, bend the pins
Finished =D>
Go have a cup of tea

As mentioned by lazyb5, you don't have track rod end on the rear axle as they are part of the steering rather than suspension. Possible over-zealous MOT tester? In my experience, when a vehicle is serviced they'll inform you of things that will need replacement in the near future (brake discs, pads, etc) and things that are damaged such as a chip in the windscreen. If you'd asked them to do a pre-MOT check, then arguably they should have checked the steering and may have picked this up.

Did the MOT station offer to fit new pins for you? Once you remove the vehicle form them, they can charge you the full price to have a re-test. Sometimes, it's easier to let them sort it out and get the free re-test.

I have a great garage near me and the mot man usually says if it needs a bulb such and lets me sort it if it's a 2 min thing. Anything else and I can fix it at home and then they retest for free.

Thanks for all replies and the photo rhino-wayne - really helpful to see what it actually is they are talking about!

You are quite right - I checked the refusal slip and it lists nearside and offside locking devices separately (not front and rear!) my mistake. The other thing it failed on was a split steering rack gaiter and a rear upper stop lamp not working - garage has quoted me £70 to fix the lot and re-test. Think that sounds reasonable?

lets say.... it isn't really that complicated.... about 30 mins work maximum and about £10 in parts....
