That would be excellent, we're looking at going across there and driving up to see the Northern Lights either next year or year after.
It would save us going south to Dover and then back up again.

Great news. I have been thinking up till now about driving up to the northernmost of the Shetland Islands when the time comes. Having read somewhere that almost all of the inter-island ferries in the Shetlands are free to use.

There's been some developments in the North Sea so I'd thought I'd resurrect this thread -

DFDS are axing the Harwich - Esbjerg ferry on the 29th Sept., so there will be no direct ferries at all to Scandinavia from the UK. We will have to go via the channel and drive all the way up through Germany, Holland and Denmark.....

There's still hope for a Newcastle - Bergen ferry though, but we've heard it all before so I'll believe it when I see it. Possibly the Harwich - Esbjerg closure will make it more viable - we can but hope....

Another year gone by and still no ferry - however, there is now a strong possibility that it might be happening next year, albeit from Harwich.

Does this ferry take private vehicles Ian? I thought it was freight only. Could be handy if it does.

Sure does. Go to webpage and after the sailing schedules there is a paragraph that is headed "passengers on freight vessels." Just before the next paragraph that is headed Driver there is a link about passenger bookings.click on that link and there is a download that gives the prices for passengers and vehicles in the different currencies. Each adult is £164 and the bongo would be £192. Those prices also incur an admin fee of £31. I understand that the cost includes cabin and meals.

When taking into account the cost of the two ferries and fuel it is not extortionate, but beyond my pocket and the saving in time and wear on the bongo it is feasible.

Yes it is an all-inclusive fare (unlike ordinary ferries) and if you price the mileage for the drive via any passenger ferry to Europe sensibly (NOT just the cost of diesel - more like 30/mile) and the toll for crossing from Denmark to Sweden and the cost of the overnight stops, it can be an absolute bargain.

E.G. - For me to drive to Gothenburg via the channel tunnel is 1100miles.
Price that at a sensible 30p/mile to cover ALL costs and you have £330 + about £100 for the chunnel and about £75 to cross the bridge from Denmark to Sweden.

So I reckon the cost to drive one way is about £500 to put toward the direct fare.

Doesn't look too bad and as said saves the drive up from Dunkirk or wherever.
Looking to go up to the North Cape, back down to Denmark and catch the ferry to Iceland sometime in the next couple of years so it would be ideal.
