Hi bongobaz,
The struts should be self lubricating, try polishing the chrome with printer paper until there are no black marks on the paper. It could be too late but worth a try.
Cheers.
Might be useful..

Doh! Could have been worse, apparently some people use WD40 on their brake pads to stop them squeaking...

Don't let the pole drink or it won't prop up the tailgate.

Hi bongobaz ,
As a temporary fix,you could get two pieces of metal/aluminium tubing adapted ( Slotted )to fit over the open ram of the strut, theses will act as a stop, and keep the tail gate open.
It will save the pole from getting wet

Or get some bicycle inner tube or some other jaw liner and use a pair of vice grips to clamp the piston and stop of from dropping.
